LNGRTON.
Packing-Cigars.
N0. 163 395. Patented Mew/18,1875.
THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOTO-LITH.39&41 PARK PLACLNAK NITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
EDl/VIN NORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING CIGARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,395, dated May 18, 1875; application filed April 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN NORTON, of Chicago, (look county, Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in the Mode of Packing Cigars, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a single case, with a cigar therein 5 Fig. 3, a plan of a package containing a number of the single cases.
Cigars are now put up for transportation and sale in packages without any substantial covering or protection except that afforded by the box in which anumber are placed. In this condition the Wrappings are liable to become injured; the cigars are not so protected as to materially interfere with evaporation, and hence they become dry; and at the same time the flavor and aroma are, to a great extent, lost, especially in localities affected by salt water. One or more cigars are frequently carried in the pocket or traveling-bag of a consumer for a time before being used, and are liable to be broken and Wholly or partially destroyed. The object of this improvement is to obviate these difficulties, which I accomplish by providing each cigar with a light but strong case, substantially air-tight, thereby preserving the cigar in a moist condition, preventing injury to the cigars by handling or contact one with another, and furnishing a case for each cigar sufficiently strong to protect it from injury by ordinary usage while in the possession of the consumer before being used.
In the drawings, A represents a strong but light case, cylindrical in form, and in diameter and length adapted to receive a single cigar. This case can be conveniently made of sheet metal. a b are the heads of the case. One must be removable, and for convenience in manufacturing both may be removable. B is a single cigar. G is a box, designed to receive any suitable number of the cases A, each containing a cigar, for transportation. These cases A can be made and sold at such price that the cost of a cigar to consumers prevention of injury, will more than compensate for the cost of the cases.
The invention Will be especially useful for the more expensive brands of cigars, which are likely to be exposed for some time afterthe box G has been opened.
I claim- As an improvement in packing and preserving the integrity and aroma of cigars, the process of isolating each cigar within a separate rigid case, as described.
EDWIN NORTON. Witnesses: E. A. WEST, 0. W. Bonn.
