UNITE TATES GEORGE TURRELL, OF PATTERSON, NEW YORK.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,815, dated ianuary 8, 1901 Application filed May 23, 1900. Serial No. 17,749. O model-l To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TURRELL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Patterson, in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar or article containing boxes; and the object thereof is to provide a box divided into a plurality of compartments in such manner that one or more cigars may be removed without exposing the remainder of the contents.
Heretofore and at present much inconvenience has resulted, as well as loss, by manufacturers, owing to the fact that retail dealers refill the boxes of a high-grade cigar with inferior articles, and thereby detract from and ruin thereputation gained by the manufacturers as a make of a superior weed. It is primarily the purpose of this invention to overcome the disadvantages mentioned in the foregoing. The manner of accomplishing this purpose will be more fully described hereinafter, pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
Referring now to the drawings by referencennmerals, l designates a rectangular box, preferably of glass and provided with a hinged side 2. Within the box 1 is arranged an interior cigar-retaining receptacle 3, divided into a plurality of compartments or cells 4, each to contain a cigar or any suitable article. These compartments or cells may be rectangular, round, or of any desired shape Without affecting the scope of the invention. At
each end of the receptacle 3 are provided slots 5, which are designed to be engaged by the clips 6 on the free ends of the coil-springs 7, secured to the inner walls of the box 1, whereby the box and receptacle will be securely fastened together.
From end to end across each series or tier of cells will be fastened a sealing-strip S-such as, for instance, an internal-revenue stamp-on which may be printed the name or trade-mark of the manufacturer of the goods, or this strip may only contain the manufacturers trade-mark. Thus it will be seen that in order to remove the articles from the cells it will be necessary to break the strip at points opposite the particular cells, which will so mutilate the stamp or strip as to indicate that the article has been removed from a particular portion of the receptacle. After all of the cigars or other articles have been removed the interior receptacle Will be valueless, for the reason that should it be filled with counterfeit goods the deception could be easily detected and the customer would refuse to purchase the inferior article.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that I have provided a cheap, durable, and efficient non-refillable cigar-box, as well as one which will protect the cigars and prevent their being broken in transit.
' Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a box or case, of a cellcase in said box, springs secured to the box and removably engaging the cell-case, and sealing devices normally closing the respective cells.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with an outer box or case, of a plurality of integral cells in said box; fastening devices carried by the box and adapted to removably engage the cells, and sealing devices for normally closing the cells.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE TURRELL.
