Thecover herewith shown has been. illustrated in associationwith a receptacle of the type commonly used for the shipment and storage of bakers products such as biscuits, crackers, etc., and to which use, the cover is particularly applicable. it being under which for the purpose of, shipmentja-ndstorage, a cover 2 may be secured in any desirable manner such as, for example, by hing,- edly attaching these elements I one to the other as has been indicated at 3, it being, perceived in the present instance that the cover 2 is formed with depending flanges 4 so that the goods contained within the receptacle will be protected against damage.

Now, referring to the construction of the display cover which is to be applied to the receptacle after the initial cover of the latter is moved to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 5, it will be seen that a main frame is utilized. This frame includes a body having rearwardly extendingflanges 5, 6 and 7, having their rear or outer edge-portions bent upon their bodies in order to strengthen the structure. The flange 7 may be interrupted throughout a portion of its length, so that it is divided into two sections, one disposed adjacent each of the upper and side edges of the main frame, the purpose of this construction becoming hereinafter apparent.

For the sake of economy in manufacture as well as providing an article which will withstand a reasonable amount of rough usage in addition to presentinga neat and attractive appearance. the frame may be formed of sheet metal and what has been termed the body of this frame may include portions 8. 9 and 10 which are bent to extend substantially at right angles to the flange portions aforementioned. It will furthermore be noted that strips 11 are preferably attached to the rear face of the frame body and these strips have their front faces lying in contact with the rear faces of the portions 8. 9 and 10, the width of the strips 11 being such that they extend beyond the inner edges of the portions afore-referred to and are bent outwardly and preferably upon themselves to form rigid forwardly eX- tending flanges 12, 13 and 14.

llingedly attached to the frame thus provided. and preferably adjacent one of the inner edges of the body thereof, as at 15, is a closure in the nature of a door which in one dimension at least, (in the present instance. its width) is less than the corresponding portion of the frame. This door includes an auxiliary frame 18, the body of which is preferably formed with an upper opening and a. lower opening, the latter being conveniently of a size materially greater than the upper opening. These openings are adapted to accommodate panels 16 and 17- the former preferably being a sheet of transparent glass while the latter may be in the nature of a name plate. by means of which the name of the manufacturer of the goods displayed in the container is brought before the public, and in order to enhance the attractiveness of the display, the body 18 adjacent each of these opening", may be formed with beads 19 and 20, if it is so desired.

The purpose of the forwardly extending flanges 12, 13 and 14 will now become apparent in that these flanges are preferably of a length suflicient to have their forward edges lie adjacent to the rear face of the auxiliary frame 18 while the rearwardly extending flanges 21, forming a part of the latter, overlie the first named flanges and have their rear edges extending to points adjacent to the main frame body. Thus, a jamb is furnisl'ied for the door and a seal is provided which is adequate to iircvent the entrance o f foreign matter into the re rcptacle body so that the merchandise within the same is maintained in a desirable condition.

In order to retain the panel 16 in applied position upon the frame 18, a strip 22 may be utilized, which extends adjacent both the lower edge of this panel and that of the frame, and this strip may be suitably associated with the frame in any desirable manner and bears against the inner face of the panel 16 to thus effectually prevent movement of the latter relative to the auxiliary frame at this point. At this point the door may carry a card holder :22 so that a card retained thereby will be held in such a manner that it will be displayed behind the panel 16. The panel providing the name plate 17 may also be attached to the frame in any desirable manner such as, for example. by utilizing lugs 23 which extend from the rear face of the frame and overlie the rear face of this panel adjacent the upper edges of the latter. The adjacent edges of the panels, i. e., the lower edge of the panel 17 and the upper edge of the panel 16, in the present embodiment, are anchored against movement by utilizing strips 24 and 25 respectively which are L-shaped in cross section and which may be secured to the frame 18 in any suitable manner, as by soldering. As is clearly brought out in Figure 5, these strips extend outwardly from the frame 18 between the panels 17 and 1G and extend upwardly and downwardly rcspectively along the inner surfaces of these panels so as to hold them in place. These strips are reinforced by a further strip 27 which may be soldered to either or both of these strips--for example to the strip 2;) As will be seen upon examination of Fig. i; the strip 27 bears closely against both of the strips 24: and 25 so as to reinforce each of these strips regardless of whether it is soldered to both of the strips or only as to one of them, as strip 25.

It will be understood, in use, thatthe receptacles with the covers applied are preferably arranged upon a rack or shelf, one beside the other, and usually in more-or less intimate contact witlr each otherdue to the limitation of space usually existing, and also to improve the attractiveness of the display. When the receptacles are so arranged, the auxiliary frames or doors of? the display covers may be freely swung relative to the main frames thereof. This is due to-the fact that in the present instance the width. of these auxiliary framesis less than the width of the receptacles and'main framesand thus the side edges of one door will not hear against or come into contactwith similar edges forming a partof the doors of adja cent receptacles.

Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the inventioncould be made without departing from the scope thereof. it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shownin the accompanying: drawings shall be interpreted as illustratiw and not in a limiting. sense.

It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention. herein d'escribed, and all statements of the scope of the invention which. as a matter of language, might be said to fall: therebe- Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A display cover for association with the open side of a receptacle, said cover being formed of sheet metaland including a main frame, continuous flanges extending rear- Wardl'y from three edge portions thereof, a pair of spaced flanges extending rearwardly from the fourth edge of said frame ant disposed adjacent the ends of said fourth edge, all of said flanges being adapted for engagement solely with similar faces of said receptacle to maintain the body of said frame applied to said receptacle, and an auxiliary frame hingedly SQCLU'OCl to one of the sides of said main frame.

2. A display device, including a rigid sheet metal frame formed with a pair of openings, panels to the rear of said openings, a. metal strip fixed to the inner face of the frame and at points beyond the panels, said strip bearing directly and frictionally against the inner faces of said panels to retain the same in position against the inner face of the frame, and a main frame to which said first named frame is swingingly secured.

A cover for receptacles, including a main frame, rearwardly-extending flanges forming a part of said frame, an auxiliary frame hingedly secured to said main frame, said main frame being adapted for applica tion to a receptacle having an initial cover movably attached to its body, said firstnamed frame being adapted to be applied to said receptacle after the cover of the latter has been moved to open the receptacle and to have its flange portions telescopically disposed relatively to and in intimate contact with certain of the wall faces of the receptacle whereby to retain said main frame in fixed position thereon, said last-named frame having portions disposed between the adja cent faces .of the receptacle cover and body to accommodate the initial receptacle cover in such position.

A display cover for receptacles including a frame having a plurality of openings therein, a panel positioned across one of said openings, means to hold said panel in position, a transparent panel across another of said openings and means adapted at once to reinforce said holding means and to receive a card in a position in which it is visible through said transparent panel.

A display cover for receptacles comprising a main frame provided with rearwardly extending flanges adapted to be telescopically disposed relative to, and to frictionally bear against, certain of the faces of the receptacle walls, an auxiliary frame movably attached to said main frame, upper and lower openings in said auxiliary frame, a panel positioned across said upper opening,

means to hold said panel in position, a trans parent panel positioned across the lower opening and unitary means adapted at once to reinforce said holding means and to receive a card in a position in which it is visible through said transparent panel.

A cover for receptacles comprising a main frame formed of sheet material, rearwardly extending flanges adapted to telescope over and frictionally bear against the outer faces of the receptacle walls, an auxiliary frame movably attached to said main frame, said auxiliary frame being formed with a pair of openings, panels for covering such openings, a pair of strips, one of said strips contacting with the rear face of one of said panels, the other strip contacting with the rear face of the other of said panels, said strips being in contact with. each other around adjacent edges of the two panels, and means for securing said strips in position whereby to retain said panels applied to said. auxiliary frame.

8. In containers, the combination of a conainer having a cover hinged thereto and adapted to be swung back against the top of the container, a separable display cover having a top flange to be inserted between the top of the container and the hinged cover when the latter is swung back, and other flanges adapted to engage against other outer surfaces of the container, adjacent to the front thereof.

9. In containers, the combination of a container having a cover hinged thereto and adapted to be swung back against the top of the container, and a separable display cover member comprising a frame having a top flange to be inserted between the top of the container and the hinged cover thereof when the latter is swung back, and other flanges adapted to engage against other outer surfaces of the container, adjacent to the front edges thereof, and a closure member hinged to said frame and adapted to seat in closed position against said frame.

10. In containers. a cover member having upper and lower adjacentopenings, a strip secured to the rear surface of said member above the lower opening and extending downwardly to retain the upper edge of a pane covering said opening, an upwardly extending strip above said first strip for retaining the lower edge of a plate covering said upper opening, and a pocket for a removable label strip comprising a front strip secured to said first strip and extending up over said second strip and a rear strip secured atits ends to said first strip and extending downwardly a short distance rearwardly from said front strip, in alignment therewith, said rear strip having a forwardly extending bottom flange to form a label strip support.

11. In containers, a cover member having an opening therethrough, a strip secured to the rear surface of said member above said opening and extending downwardlyto retain said first strip and extending downwardly ,a

short .distance rearwardly fromi-said front strip, in alignment therewith,. sa1id rear-strip having a forwardly extending bottom flange to form a label strip support.

12. In containers, a cover member, having an opening therein, a pane positionedbehind andcovering said opening, an angular strip bearing against the upper edge of, said pane and the rear surface thereof adjacent to its upper edge, to retain the upper edge of said pane in place, and a pocket fora removable label strip extending below said angular strip, into position to be visible through the upper portion of said pane.

13. In containers, a cover member having upper and lower adjacent openings, a name plate positioned behind the upper and a pane behind the lower opening, and an angular member bearing against Y the upper edge of said pane and the rear surface thereof adjacent to its upper edge .to. retain, said upper edge in place, a further angular member having an upwardly extending portion behind said name plate exerting pressure thereomand a member extending below said angular, members and constituting a pocket fora removable label strip, so positioned as to be visible through the upper portion of said'pan'e.

20. A display device formed of metal and including parts bent to provide a frame body, the latter comprising rearwardly-extending flanges, portions extending at substantial right angles to and from the forward edges of the flanges, further flange port-ions extending forwardly at the inner edges of said latter portions, and a cover including a body and flanges extending rear- Xvardly therefrom, and means providing a hinge coupling one of the'latter flanges to one of the angular frame portions; the flanges of said cover, when the latter seated upon the frame, lying immediately adja cent the forwardlyextending flanges of said frame.

21. A display device formed of metal and including parts bent to provide a frame body, the latter comprising rearwardly-erz tending flanges having inturned portions at the rear edges thereof, portions extending atsubstantial right angles to and from the forward edges of the flanges further flange portions extending forwardly at the inner edges of said latter portions, said latter flange portions having their edges bent inwardly upon their bodies, and a cover including a body and flanges extending rcar wardly therefrom, certain of said latter flanges having their edges turned upon their bodies to extend forwardly, and means providing a hinge coupling one of the latter flanges to one of the angular frame portions; the flanges of said cover, when the latter is seated upon the frame, lying im mediately adjacent the forwardly-extending flanges of said frame.

22. A display device formed of metal and including parts bent to provide a frame body, the latter comprising 1'earwardlyextending flanges, portions extending at substantial right angles to and from the for ward edges of the flanges, further flange portions extending forwardly at the inner edges of said latter portions, a cover includ ing a body and flanges extending rearwardly therefrom, and means providing a hinge cou pling one of the latter flanges to one of the angular frame portions; the flanges of said cover, when the latter is seated upon the frame, lying imn'iediately adjacent the forwardly-extending flanges of said frame, the cover presenting four side edges, and the frame having a shape corresponding to that of the cover, two of the opposite flanges of the cover being spaced a distance substantially equal to the spacing between the rearwardly-extending flange portions of the frame which are adjacent thereto. the two other cover flanges being spaced from each other a distance less than the distance between the corresponding rearwardly-extemling frame flange portions to expose parts of the surfaces of the right angle portions of the frame when the cover is in seated position thereon.

23. A display device formed of metal and including parts bent to provide a frame body, the latter comprising rearwardly-extending flanges, portions extending at substantial right angles to and from the forward edges of the flanges, further flange portions extending forwardly at the inner edges of said latter portions, and a cover ineluding a body and flanges extending rearwardly therefrom, and means providing a hinge coupling one of the latter flanges to one of the angular frame portions; the flanges of said cover, when the latter seared upon the frame, lying imn'iediately adjacent the forwardly-extending flanges of said. frame, the cover presenting four side edges, and the frame having a shape corresponding to that of the cover, the upper and lower cover flanges being spaced a distance substantially equal to the distance between the corresponding 'rearwardly-extending frame flanges, the distance between the side cover flanges being appreciably less than the distance between the rearWardly-extending frame flanges which are adjacent thereto so that when the cover is in seated position upon the frame parts of the right angle frame portions will be exposed beyond the side edges of the cover.
