illy invention relates to an apparatus for 'lelivering coal to hoppers of stokers for feedingfuel continuously to a furnace and, while it may be used with furnaces of any type, is particularly adapted for use in connection with multiple retort stokers of the underfeed type and it has for an object to secure a uniform delivery of fuel to a plu rality of retorts which receive fuel from a single hopper.
Another object of my invention is to provide a Stoker such that if one chute becomes clogged the retorts immediately below it will receive fuel from other chutes. A still further object is to produce a device of the de scribed character which will be simple yet positive in operation, easily made, inexpensive in construction yet durable.
rlhese and other objects of my invention will be evident from the following specification and claims having reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a front view of the hopper of a multiple retort Stoker with one embodiment of my device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan View showing` the chutes in section; Fig. 3 isa section on line III-III of Fig. 2.
In constructinga device embodying my invention I may use a progressive fuel feed Stoker having a fuel hopper extending along the front of the furnace. A numberof chutes are arranged in staggered relation in two rows. These chutes are provided with spreaders, the spreaders of one row overlapping with those of the other row.
In my preferred embodiment, which is" shown in the accompanying` drawing, the hopper l0 of a multiple retort stoker is located above the ram boxes ll which are of a well-known type. The fuel is supplied to the hopper through chutes l3-14, these being arranged in two rows, the chutes 14 of one row being spaced intermediate the chutes 13 of the other row. At the bottom of each chute is a spreader 16. These spreaders are wider than the distance between the chute of one row and the corresponding chute of the other row which, causes them to over-lap for a considerable part of their distance. In feeding the fuel through the chutes there is a tendency to segregation and if' the chutes do not overlap the lumps are fed to the retort directly under the chutes and the line coal is fed to the intermediate 1925. In my device a retort which is directly under one chute will also be near the end of the spreader of an adjacent row, while those under the end of the spreader of the same chute. will be under the chute of another' row. The intermediate retorts will be under the intermediate portions of the spreaders of two rows. For this reason all retorts will receive a fuel of substantially similar characteristics.
Furthermore, should one of the chutes become clogged, the ret-Orts receiving fuel from this chute will not run with a diminished fuel supply for the retorts will receive fuel from the spreaders of the other row although the character of the coal will not be of' such uniform quantity as would be the case when the retort is receiving fuel from two spreaders. Vxhile this condition is not, of course, desirable, yet it causes far less serious difficulties than the complete failure of the fuel supply to a retort.
lVhile I have Shown my invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those Skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modifications, without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are spe cifically set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a multiple retort stoker, a hopper for said Stoker, a plurality of chutes having discharge ends arranged to discharge into said hopper, said discharge ends being arranged in a plurality of rows and the discharge ends of one row being staggered with respect tothe discharge ends of the other row.
2. In combination with a multiple retort Stoker, a hopper for said Stoker, a plurality of rows of chutes for Said hopper, the chutes of one row being offset with respect to the chutes of the other rows and spreaders between said chutes vand said hopper'.
8. In combination with a multiple retort stolzer, a hopper for said Stoker, a plurality of rows of chutes for said hopper, the chutes of one row being offset with respect to the chutes of the other rows and spreaders between said chutes and said hopper, the spreaders of one roW overlapping those of the other rows.

In combination with a progressive fuel feed furnace, a hopper, means; for supplyingfuel from said hopper to said furnace, a plurality of f'uel conduits arranged parallel to each other and dischargingl into said hopper, Said conduits being so arranged that the Zones of fuel supply of said conduits overlap.

In'conihination with a. progressive-fuel feed furnace, a hopper, means for supplying` fuel from said hopper to saidr furnace, and a plurality of' series'of vertically disposed fuel conduits arranged in parallel relation to eacn other and discharging into said hopper, said conduits being so arranged that the Zones of fuel supply of .said conduits overlap.
