TUYERE STRUCTURE FOR STDKERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. FoREsMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 21 Jansen Ave, Essington, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuyere Structures for Stokers, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to stoker structures and more particularly to that class of underfeed stokers employing alternately disposed retorts and inclined tuyeres, and it has for its object the provision of an improved air-cooled locking member which is simple in construction and which affords no place for fuel lodgment.
Another object is to provide a locking member which afl'ords an ample air passage through which air may be freely delivered from the tuyere boxes to the air distributing box, thus insuring the delivery of ample quantities of air to the distributing box, but, at the same time, preventing overhe' ting of the locking member or the formation of clinkers adjacent the air delivery box.
These and other objects are attained by means of a'locking member embodying the features herein described and illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming I part hereof, wherein Fig. 1 is a transverse section on the line 1I of Fig. 2 through an underfeed furnaclti, and ,stok'er in the vicinity of the front we Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the construction taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the stoker includes a series of fuel hoppers 5 mounted adjacent the front wall 6 of the furnace. Each ghopper is provided with a discharge outlet 7 through which fuel is forced into the retort aligned therewith by means of a. rain 9 which reciprocates within the bottom section of the hopper. As shown, each retort consists of a bottom portion 10 and side walls 11 forming a fuel trough which extends longitudinally of the furnace.
Tuyereblocks 12 are mounted in overlapped relation on the adjacent'sides of adjacent retorts, the said sides being spaced apart to form a tuyere box 14 between adjacent retorts which is in open communication with an air box 28 formed beneath near the air-distributing box upon the forward I ends of the retorts or upon the hopper castings, and to supply it with air through ports in the upper portion of the tuyere box. The
available space at the point of connection of the air distributing box with the tuyerc box is frequently limited so that adequate air passages cannot be provided for conducting air from the tuyere box to the airdistributing box. In order to obviate this 'difiiculty, I provide hollow locking members 17 which are adapted to bemounted upon the uppermost tuyere blocks 12 so as to prevent vertical displacement thereof. Lateral displacement of the tuyeres is. prevented by the dowel pins 18 projecting up wardly from sockets 19 provided in the upper faces of the top tuyeres, and engaging slots 19' in lower faces of the locking members 17.
Each locking member is provided withan air space or passage 20 which receives air froma tuyere box through a passage 21 which is formed-by suitable notches in the forward ends of the uppermost tuyere blocks.
The forward face of the locking member is set/at an angle corresponding to the adjacent rear face of the air-distributing box 15 and is provided with a discharge orifice 2 2 surrounded by a neck or collar 23 which projects into the air space 16 in the air- -distributing box through an orifice 24. The space between the front face of the lock-- .ing member and the adjacent rear face of the air-distributing box is closed by means of a suitable packing which is tightly compressed when the locking member is drawn into operative position toward the air-distributing box by suitable bolts 25. The bolts 25 are inclined with respect to the top face of the member and are fastened to the flanges 26 of the tuyere boxes in such manner that when the nuts 27 are tightened,
the locking members are drawn downward and toward the air-distributing box, thus making an air-tight joint between the air distributing box and the locking members.
The advantage of this construction resides in the fact that ample air passages through which air may 'freely pass to the air-distributing box are made possible and that the locking members are cooled by contact with the cool air passing through them. 'lVhere it has been the practice to provide solid locking crowns through which no air is circulated, particularly with flat upper surfaces, fuel has tended to lodge thereupon and to smolder because of insufficient air. As a result, objectionable smoke has formed and leaked out into the fire-room..
'ith the proposed structure, the fuel tends to slide off from the locking member rather than to lodge thereupon, and all fuel. in passing over this portion of the grate is subject to active combustion and strong draft so that the leakage of smoke into the fire-room is effectually prevented.
hile I have described and illustrated but one embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes, modifications, additions, and omissions may be made in the apparatus described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth by the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A stoker construction comprising an air distributing box extending across the furnace adjacent the front wall thereof, tuyere boxes extending longitudinally of the furnace, tuyeres mounted on the tuyere boxes and receiving air therefrom, locking members for securing the tuycres in position mounted upon the uppermost tuyeres and disposed adjacent the air distributing box, and means for establishing communication from the tuycre boxes to the distributing box, through the said locking members.
2. A stoker construction comprising an air distributing box extending across the furnace adjacent the front wall thereof, tuycre boxes extending longitudinally of the furnace, tuycres mounted on the tuyere boxes and receiving air therefrom, locking means for the tuycrcs disposed adjacent the air distributing box, and means for passing air from the tuycre boxes to the air distributing box through the said locking means.
3. A stoker construction comprising an air distributing box extending across the furnace adjacent the front wall thereof, tuycre boxes extending longitudinally of the furnace, tuyeres mounted on the tuyere boxes and receiving air therefrom, locking members for the said tuyeres disposed between the said air distributing box and the said tuyeres establishing communication between the said air distributingbox and the said tuyere boxes; and refractory packing between the said locking members and the air distributing box.
4. A stoker construction comprising an air distributing box extending across the furnace adjacent the front endthereof, tuyere boxes extending longitudinally of the furnace, tuyeres mounted on the tuyere boxes and receiving air therefrom, locking members disposed between the tuyeres and the air distributing box adapted to engage the uppermost tuyeres to prevent vertical and lateral displacement of the latter, each of the said locking members being provided with an air delivery neck and thesaid distributing box with cooperating openings through which said necks project, packing disposed between the locking members and the said air distributing box and, surrounding said necks, means for drawing the locking members into contact with the said tuyeres and with the said packing, and means for delivering air to the said distributing box.

A. stoker-construction comprising an air distributing box, tuyere boxes disposed adjacent the air distributing box, tuyeres mounted on the tuyere boxes and receiving air therefrom, locking members disposed between the tuyeres and the air distributing box adapted to engage the -uppermost tuyeres to prevent vertical displacement of the latter and receive air from the said tuyre boxes, each of the said locking members being provided with an outlet orifice and said air distributing box with cooperating orifices registering with said outlet orifices, whereby air may pass from the tuyere boxes to the air distributing box.
6. A stoker construction comprising an air distributing box, tuyere boxes disposed adjacent the air distributing box, tuyeres mounted on the tuyere boxes and receiving air therefrom, locking members disposed between the tuycres and the air distributing box adapted to engage the uppermost tuyeres to prevent vertical displacement of the latter and receive air from the said tuyere boxes, each of the said locking members being provided with an outlet orifice and said air distributing box with cooperating orifices registering with said outlet orifices, packing between the said air distributing box and the said locking members, and means for drawing the locking members into contact with the said distributing box and with the said packing.
