Description

Unrrnn STATES TENT FFIGE.
NOAH HARRIS, OF NORTH GROVE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HIRAM STOUT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES FOR PACKING LAMP-CHIMNEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,285, dated April 20, 1875; application filed December 12, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH HARRIS, of North Grove, in the county of Miami and State of In diana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Ohimney-Shipping Boxes and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The drawing is a representation of a vertical sectional view of the box, and also of the chimneys.
This invention has relation to packing-boxes, which are especially designed for the prevention of breakage of lamp-chimneys during transportation; and the nature of the invention consists in. chimney-holders, adapted to hold the lampchimneys isolated from each other and from the walls of the box, whereby they are guarded against concussion, and against shocks incident to handling and transportation, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, A designates an ordinary packing-box, preferably of rectangula-r form, in connection with which I propose to show the construction and use of my improved chimney-holders. This box may be provided with a hinged lid, (1, or the same may be nailed thereto in the usual well-known manner. B designates cups, rigidly secured in any suitahle manner to the bottom of the box, which preferably are of pasteboard, but may be of any elastic substance, and are in the shape of the frustum of a cone. These cups are of such size as that they shall be snugly received within the lower part of glass chimneys G,
holding the same from contact with the bottom (0 of the box. D indicates similar cups of a like material, which are rigidly secured to the under side of the lid to, and are adapted to he received within the open upper ends of chimneys O. The vertical height of the box between its top and bottom is preferably greater than that of the chimneys, and consequently their tops and bottoms are held from contact with the top and bottom of the case, when they are'in position therein, as shown in the drawing, and the said chimneys are consequently but little exposed to injury from shocks produced, either in handling the box or while the same is being transported to a market. E E designate diaphragms having through them a suitable number of apertures adapted for receiving within them the chimneys. These diaphragms are preferably of pasteboard of sufficient rigidity, and are applied one above and the other below the swell or bulb c of the chimneys. They are also sustained against undue penetration into the box by means of suitable rests d rigidly secured to the walls of the same, and they are designed to mitigate lateral shocks, and to prevent lateral displacement of the chimneys.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A box for packing lamp-chimneys, having the perforated diaphragms E E, rests (Z, and cups D B, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
NOAH HARRIS.
