Description

H. C; HACKETT. SHIPPING CASE FOR EGGS. APPLICATIO'N FILED mmzz. 1914.
Patented Sept. 14, 1915.
UNITE sTxTns PATENT oT Tcn.
HARRY C. HA'CKETT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO GEORGE W. ANDERSON AND JOSEPH P. FITZGERALD, BOTH OF KANSAS CITY,
MISSOURI.
SHIPPING-CASE non noes.
Application filed January 22, 1914. Serial No. 818,689.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. HACKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shipping- Cases for Eggs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates shipping cases for eggs.
The object of my invention is 'to provide a novel shipping case in whichreggs may be safely transported by express or parcel post, and which does not require care in handling to prevent breakage of the eggs.
A further object of my invention is to provide a shipping case which will meet the requirements of the postal regulations, which ischeaply made, which may be quickly filled or emptied, which is extremely light and strong, and which is of compact form.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved shipping case, partly broken away, and with the cover shown in the open position. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the case, showing the cover in the closed position and eggs mounted in the case. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inner container box. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the outer container box partly broken away.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the outer casing comprising preferably a box and cover of rectangular form made from a single piece of cardboard comprising three layers, the middle one of which is corrugated. The cover 2 of the outer casing is hinged at one edge to the body of the casing and has hinged to its other edges respectively three flaps 3which, when the cover is in the closed position, shown in Fig. 2, embrace respectively the adj acent three sides of the body of the casing.
to improvements in 4 designates the inner container box,
In its operative position, the inner container box 4 is inverted as shown in Fig. 1. Secured to the bottom of each of the boxes 4 and 5 upon the inner side thereof are a plurality of vertical tubular egg containers 6, the containers in one box being disposed so as to respectively longitudinally aline with the containers in the other box, as is shown in Fig. 1.
Each of the containers 6 consists preferably of a card board tube having double walls, the inner one of which is preferably corrugated, as shown in the drawing. Each container 6 is provided adjacent to the end, which is secured to the bottom of the box which contains it, with a yielding seat comprising preferably a cup-shaped member 7 aving a flexible end provided with a central hole 8, which is adapted to receive one end of an egg which is held in the container. The other end of the egg is mounted in a similar hole provided in a similar cup-shaped seat-7, which is provided in the container 6 supported by the opposite box.
The depth of each of the boxes 4: and 5 is such, preferably, that when the eggs, designated by 9 are mounted in the containers, the adjacent edges of. the boxes 4 and 5 will be separated from each other, so that the eggs will wholly support the box which chances to be at the top.
In the operation of my invention, the eggs may first be placed in the containers 6 of the box 4, this being the shallow box, after which the larger and deeper box 5 is inverted and then slipped over the smaller box 4 to a position in which which are held in the box 5. The box 5, with the box 4. held therein, is then slipped into the casing 1, with either one of the boxes in the uppermost position, as may be convenient for the operator. In Fig. 1, the smaller box 4 is the one which is shown in the upper and inverted position. The cover 2 is then swung to the closed position shown in Fig."2, after which the'flaps 3 are Patented se eia, 11915.
swung against the adjacent sides of the body i and resilient, as they are, 10.
orted adjacent to their ends by the flexible ottoms of the cup-shaped seats 7 and when so supported, the casing may be veryroughly handled without danger of breaking the eggs, and in case that anyof the eggs should be broken, none of the material can escape from the casing.
By having the cup-shaped seats 7 yielding said seats which support the longer eggs, will yield, when the casing has been closed and tied up, sufliciently to permit the smaller eggs to have their ends engaged and be supported by the seats which are adjacent-to their ends. To enable this to be accomplished, the length of the containers 6 is such that when filled with eggs of the ordinary run and size, the ends of the containers which are in and are secured to the box 4, will be separated and out of contact from the adjacent ends of the containers 6 which are secured to the box 5.
- The eggs will thus be firmly held at their ends by yielding supports, and will have their ends spaced apart from the bottoms of the boxes t and 5, the depth of the cupshaped seats 7, and the diameters of the holes 8 being such that a space will be provided between the extreme ends of theeggs and the bottoms of the boxes {1 and '5.
' appended claims, may
Patent, is
In a shipping case for eggs, twd boxes, one removably and slidably mounted in the other, and'two sets of tubular containers respectively mounted in said boxes and secured to the bottoms thereof, said sets of containers being respectively provided with yielding seats having holes adapted to respectively receive the ends of eggs held in said containers, the containers of one set being disposed respectively 'in longitudinal alinement, with the containers of the other set, the containers of opposite sets being arranged inpairs, each pair being adapted to contain an egg.
In testimony whereofl have signed this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
