Description

Ja 4, 1927- E. JHANNESEN STRAP origina Filed J y v. ;925
INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patenta& Jan. 4, 1927.
UNITED STATES' JOHAN E. JOHANNESEN, or nunvionn, PENNSYLVANIA.
STRAP.
Original application filed July 7, 1925, Serial No. 42,089. Ilivded and this application filed October 5,
1925. serial No. 60,547.
This invention relates to improvements in straps and is a divisional application to that filed by me on July 7th, 1925, for garments, Sr. No. 42,089.
I The primary object of the nventon resides in the provision of a V-shaped reinforced strap for overalls, to which the suspender strap is adapted to be Secured and which is capable of withstanding a great 10 strain between the upper and lower parts of the garment during the wearing of the same.
Another object of the invention is to construct a V-shaped strap from waste materal 15 and cutting, folding and stitching the same in such a Inanner as to provide a reinforced two-ply strap.
A further object resides n the Construction of a reinforced fab-ric strap, which s simple in Construction, inexpensive of manufacture and strong and durable when in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangenent of 35 parts, the essential features 'of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanyng drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank of Inaterial from which my improved strap is cut. Figure 2 is a plan View of the strap after being cut from the blank of material.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the 35 manner of folding.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the finished strap.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a rear elevation of a garment with my improved strap applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved reinforced V-shaped strap and 45 which is shown applied in Figures 4 to 6 inclusive of the drawing. The strap is primarily adapted for use in connection with a garment in the nature of overalls 11 as shown in Figure 6 of the drawing.
For the Construction of my strap, I utilize waste material from which the garment proper is formed and one of the blank pieces of such fabric material is shown at 12 in Figure 1 of the drawing. The fabric is cut along the dotted lines 13 to conform to the shape of the strap to be formed and which is V-shaped in plan. The cut-out piece is indioated at 14 and includes diverging legs or branches 15 and 16. During the cutting operation, the leg 15 is cut transversely as at 17 from its inner edge and in alignment with the inner edge of the leg 16 for a .distance equal to one-half of the width of the leg. The fabric forming the legs 15 and 16 is folded upon the lines 18 and 19 respectively which divides the legs into tWo flaps 20 and 21, and 22 and 23. In folding, the outer flap 22 of the leg 16 is brought over the flap 23 of the same leg and the inner flap 21 of the leg 15 is brought over the flap 20 of the same leg. In this way, the under flaps 20 and 23 are disposed on the same plane, while the fiaps 21 and 22 are on a plane overlying the aforementioned flaps, thus providing two thicknesses or plies of material.
The edges of the legs are stitched as at 24 so as to hold the flaps together and to give the finished appearance to the strap. j
In Fgure 6 of the drawing, I have illustrated one use of my invention in which the legs are fixedly connected to the upper edge of a lower garment portion 25 of the overall 11 in aligninent with the legs of said garment portion. The strap carries a button 26 at the base of the legs and to which the suspender 27 of the upper garment portion 28 is detachably connected. It will be appreciated that a great strain is placed upon a garment of this kind during the wearing of the same, and it is necessary to provide a strong connection for the suspender. It will be seen that a pull eXerted on the suspender 27 will cause the strain to be equally spread through i the legs of the V-shaped strap thus preventing the tearing of the strap from the lower garment portion.
What is claimed as new is 2-- A strap cut froni a blank of fabric material to provide a V-shaped piece, one of the legs of said V-shaped piece being cut transversely for a distance equal to one-half the width of the same and in alignment with the inner edge of the other leg, the legs of said piece being folded along their longitudinal Centers, the nner half of one leg being folded over the outer half of the same, While the outer half of the other leg is folded over the nner half of the same to cause one end of the nner folded half of one leg to le fiush against the longitudi al edge of the outer folded half of the other leg, to provide a.
strap of two thcknesses of materaltand sttchng passing through the thcknesses of material adjacent the edges of said legs. 1
In testmony whereof *I have .afiixe'd my signature.
