Description
Patented Jan. 4, 11927,
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
AUSTINF. TEIGEN, OIF MOORIHEAWD, MINNESOTA.
CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application led arch 8 1926. Serial No. 93,292. p
The invention relates to improvements in devices for `holding cigarettes' or cigars while smoking the saine and it aims to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple and inexpensive, yet will be efficient, reliable and in every way desirable.
With the foregoing in'view, the invention resides inthe novel subject n'iatter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by `the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view showing a cigarette held by the movable aw plates of the device.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the manner in which the jaw plates are outwardly movable to either release a butter to permit 'engagement thereof with afresh ci arette. b
ig. 4 is a. side elevation of the cylindrical body.
Fig. 5 is an inner side elevation of one of the jaw plates. y
Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sectional views on lines 6-6 and 7--7 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing above briey described, the preferred form of construction has been disclosed and while this construction will be hereinafter specifically defined, it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
The numeral 8 designates a mouth piece I having a cylindrical front portion 9 and of course provided with a smoke passage 10. Connected with the frontend of this mouth piece and projecting forwardly therefrom is a substantially cylindrical body 11 having a smoke passage 12 registering with the passage 8, the front end of said body 11 eing concave as indicated at 13 to engage the rear end of a'cigarette.
the body 11 and the mouth piece 8 I prefer to provide the former with a nipple .14 which is threaded into a socket 15 in the mouth piece. A
The ntermediate'portion of the body 11 is substantially the same in diameter as the cylindrical end 9 of the mouth piece 8, vbut maybe slightly less, and this intermediate portion possesses a small dimension when measured in a direction longitudinallyof thebody 11,fso`that it provides an outstanding In connecting annular ridge 1G. The front portieri ol` the body l1. thatis the partbetwecn the i'idge 16 and the front end 'of said body, is pret'- 4erably of a diameter somewhat smaller than said ridge, and this front portion is provided with a 'groove 17. The rear end portion ot'body ll, is of a diameter still less than that of the front portion, in the present disclosure.
Resting against the outer' side of the body l1, at the front portion thereof and jointly forming a split tube to receive the cigarette C. are 'a number of jaw plates 18', said jaw plates extending across the groove 17, having transverse ridges 19 Inockably received in said groove, `and being provided with rear .the portion 9 of the mouth piece 8, the body 11 and the rear portions of the jaw plates 18, said sleeve having an inwardly turned Harige or the like 22 at its front end which engages the outer sides of said plates. Between its ends, the sleeve 21 is formed with an internal ridge 23, and between this ridge and the mouth piece 8, a coiled compression spring 24 is disposed, said spring surrounding the rear art of thebody 11. This spring normal y acts to slide the sleeve 2l forwardly, thereby causing it to hold the jaw plates 11 'in retracted position as shown 1n Fig. 2, the ridge 23 then bearing against the ridge or shoulder 16 so as to limit the forward movement o'f said sleeve 21. When the jaw plates 18 are to be opened, sleeve 21 is pulle rearwardly against the action of the spring 24, as shown in Fig. 3, the ange or the like 22 then engaging the rear ends 20 of the plates 18 and movingthem inwardly against the body 11, so that the front. portions of these plates are separated.
Thus, a cigarette may be easily positioned continuous peripheral` scope of the invention as claimedu Furthermore, While it is shown and described for holding a cigarette, it is of course possible that it could be shaped to hold a cigar instead.
I claim:
l. A cigarette holder comprising a mouth piece, an elongated body connected to and projecting forwardly from said mouth piece, the rear portion of said body being of less diameter than the mouth piece, the front portion of said body being provided with an external circumferential groove, a plurality of jaw plates lying against the outer sideof said front portion of the body and extending across said groove, said jaw plates having inwardly projecting' means rockably re,- ceived in said groove, a cont-rolling sleeve for said jaw plates slidablysurrounding the rear portions thereof, said sleeve also surrounding the bod and the front end of the mouth piece, an being provided with an internal'ridge spaced forwardly from said mouth piece, a coiled compression spring intei-posed between said ridge and the mouth piece for forwardly sliding the sleeve to operative position, and a shoulder at the eX- terior of the body cooperable with the aforeforwardly from said mouth piece, the front portion of said body. having a circumferential groove, jaw plates lying against and projecting forwardly from said front 'portion of the body, said jaw plates extending across said groove and having inwardly projecting means rockably received therein, and a controlling sleeve for said jaw plates, the front portion of said sleeve surrounding the rear portions o't said jaw plates While the rear end of said sleeve surrounds the front part of said mouth piece. l 3. A structure as specified in claim 2; the iront end of said sleeve having an inwardly 'extending ridge which slidably engages the outer sides lot said jaw pla-tes, the portions ot' said jaw plates behind theirinwardly projecting means, being outwardly directed at an obtuse angle to the major portions ofsaid plates.
In testimony whereof -I have hereunto aiixed my. signature.
AUSTIN F. TEIGEN.
