This invention relates to furnaces.
It has for its object to provide an improved furnace. A further object is to pro vide an improved furnace especially adapted to use with drill steels or; 'ogther desired articles having improved combustion and heat distributing chambers. A further object is to provide an initial enlarged fuel combustion chamber which has communication with a relatively narrower chamber over which the drill steels to be heated are disposed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form 15 which my invention may assume in practice.

Fig. 1 is a longitudinal transverse section of my improved furnace taken substantially on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, with parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the illustrative ,form of my. invention I have shown the same as comprising a brick retaining rectangularly shaped box 1 mounted upon suitable supporting legs 2 and having at one end thereof outwardly projecting walls 3 which are spaced inwardly from the longitudinal sides of the box 1 and connected by a transverse wall 4. Disposed in the bottom and sides of the box 1 are fire bricks 5 so spaced that a central vertical longitudinal opening 6 is formed between the adjacent ends of said bricks. There is also disposed within the Walls 3 and 4 an initial combustion and mixing chamber formed by central fire bricks 7 a considerable distance apart, and bricks 8 and 9 disposed on each end of said central ones. The bricks 9 are tapered so that the initial combustion chamber will converge into the narrow chamber 6, which also prevents eddy currents or the like. The rear bricks 8 have inclined surfaces terminating adjacent a burner 10 mounted within the transverse wall 4. Fuel and air may be supplied to the burner 10 by any suitable valve controlled supply pipes 11 and 12,

Disposed, upon the top of the box 1 are transversely adjustably mounted bricks 14 upon which a drill steel 15 may rest so that the bit end thereof will lie over the opening formed between the adjacent ends of the 1924. Serial No. 794,052.
It will be seen that in my improved furnace fuel upon first entering the initial com bustion chamber will have a relatively large volume within which the constituent elements of the fuel may become intimately mixed for combustion so that a very highly centralized heat will be directed against the ends of the steels. It has been found that by making one size of a continuous passage from the burner throughout the length of the furnace such an intense heat is not obtained as in the present construction which is due to the double chambers of different sizes. 1
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be under stood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A heating furnace comprising an elongated combustion chamber having a substantially horizontal plane bottom and comprising an enlarged port-ion for initially receiving the combustible mixture and an alined elongated communicating restricted heating portion, a narrow elongated passage communicating with the restricted portion of said chamber substantially throughout the length of the latter and through which the burned mixture from said chamber passes, and a burner discharging longitudinally of said chamber, said plane bottom and restricted portion graduating the heat to a maximum temperature at the end of said chamber remote from the burner discharge.
2. A heating furnace comprising an elongated combustion chamber having a substantially horizontal plane bottom, a transversely enlarged portion for initially receiving the combustible mixture, and an alined communicating transversely restricted heating portion, a narrow elongated passage communicating with the restricted portion of said chamber through which the burned mixture from said chamber passes, and a burner discharging longitudinally of said chamber, said horizontal plane bottom and said restricted portion graduating the heat to a maximum temperature at the end of said chamber remote from the burner discharge.
3. A heating furnace comprising an elongated combustion chamber having a substantially horizontal plane bottom, a transversely enlarged portion for initially receiving the combustible mixture, and an alined communicating transversely restrict ed heating portion, said enlarged portion having a smooth surface converging with said restricted portion, a narrow elongated passage communicating with the restricted portion of said chamber through which the burned mixture from said chamber passes. and a burner discharging longitudinally of said chamber, said horizontal plane bottom and said restricted portion graduating the heat to a maximum temperature at the end of said chamber remote from the burner discharge.
4 A heating furnace comprising an elongated combustion chamber having a sub stantially horizontal plane bottom, a transversely enlarged portion forinitially receiving the combustible mixture, and an alined connnunicating transversely restricted heating portion, said portions having parallel side walls, a narrow elongated vertical passage communicating with the restricted portion of said chamber through which 'the burned mi; me from said cham ber passes, and a burner discharging longitudinally of said chamber, said horizontal plane bottom and said restricted portion graduating the heat to a maximum temperature at the end of said chamber remote from .the burner discharge.

In a heating furnace comprising an elongated combustion chamber havinga substantially horizontal plane bottom, an. alined transversely enlarged portion for initially l'GCGiVlllg the combustible mixture, and a commimicating transversely restricted heating portion, said portions having parallel side walls and smooth tapering surfaces connecting said side walls, a narrow elongated vertical passage communicating with the restricted portion of said chamber through which the burned mixture from said chamber passes, and a burner discharging longitudinally of said chamber, said hori :zontal plane bottom and said restricted p01- tion graduating the heat to a manimum'temperature at the end of said chamber remote from the burner discl'iarge.
6.
