This invention relates to a rail joint.
it is aimed to provide a novel construction wherein the meeting ends of rails are effectively secured together, with greater elliciency and security and by means which may be incorporated into the rails at minimum cost.
Another object is to provide a construction wherein a chair coacts therewith to assist in maintaining the parts in coupled relation.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 designates usual railway track rails having their adjacent ends formed to carry out the invention. One of said sections has the tread cut away at a portion thereof and is provided with a lateral enlargement 11 having a recess or socket 12 in its upper surface. The web portion 13, beyond said enlargement, has a notch 14 in its upper surface and a lug 15 rising therefrom.
Said rail section also, at the base of the web portion 13, is provided with lateral projections 16 and with beveled walls as at 17.
The other rail section 10 has the base flange cut away and above the same is. provided with spaced walls 18 providing a slot 19 between them whereby said rail is adapted to straddle the web end 18, the latter being disposed in the slot 19. The lower edges of the walls 18 are inclined as at 20 so as to snugly or intimately fit'the walls 17 and such walls 18 are also recessed or slotted as at 21 in order to receive the projection 16. In addition, the outwardly projecting tread portion 22 has a lug or projection 23 depending therefrom adapted to enter the 1926. Serial No. 105,464.
The rails may be driven by spikes to the ties in the usual manner and thereby held together or they may be secured together in any appropriate manner.
As shown, a chair 26 is used having integral inwardly extending flanges 27 thereon. The ends of the rails may be slipped onto the chair 26 and have their base flanges overlapped by the flanges may rest on a tie or span a plurality of ties and be secured to them by spikes or other fastenings passing through alined openings and notches 28 and 29 in the said chair and base flanges of the rails, respectively.
It is to be understood that due clearance is made in the parts to permit of proper contraction and expansion under varying atmospheric conditions.
I claim as my invention 1. A joint for the meeting ends of rails, one of said ends having an enlargement and a web portion beyond the same, the other end having spaced walls straddling the web portion and having a projection beyond the same provided with a depending lug, said enlargement having a socket receiving said lu 2. A joint for the meeting ends of rails. one of said ends having an enlargement and a web portion beyond the same, the other end having spaced Walls straddling the web portion and having a projection beyond the same provided with a depending lug, said enlargement having a socket receiving said lug, and interfitting means in said web portion and tread of the opposite rail.
3. A joint for the meeting ends of rails, one of said ends having an enlargement and a web portion beyond the same, the other end having spaced walls straddling the web portion and having a projection beyond the same provided with a depending lug, said enlargement having a socket receiving said lug, the lower edges of said walls and the adjacent portions of the coacting rail meeting along oppositely inclined surfaces.
4. A joint for the meeting ends of rails. one of said ends having an enlargement and a web portion beyond the same, the other end having spaced walls straddling the web 27. The chair portion and having a projection beyond the same provided With a depending lug, said enlargement having a socket receiving said lug, the lower edges of said Walls and the adjacent portions of the coacting rail meeting along oppositely inclined surfaces, interengaging means between the Web portion and said Walls adjacent said surfaces.
5. A joint for the meeting ends of rails, one of said ends having its tread cut away at a portion thereof and an enlargement and a Web portion below the same, said enlargement having a socket in its upper surface, said Web portion having a notch and a projection, the other rail end being cut away at the base and above the same having spaced Walls and a tread portion projecting out- Wardly from the same, said Walls straddling said Web portion, said Walls at their lower edges engaging the adjacent rail along oppositely inclined surfaces, inter-engaging means on the rails adjacent said surfaces, said projecting tread portion having a depending lug engaging said socket, and a lug extending between Walls engaging the first mentioned notch, and said Walls having a recess between the same for engagement by the'first mentioned lug.
