Such railways are frequently carelessly laid and no great care is taken to insure a level road bed, rigidity of the ties, or to provide properly secure connections between the rails and the ties or the rails with each other. The result is that the rails frequently cant relative to adjacent rails at their ends, causing the derailment of the rolling stock, with the accompanying damage and loss of'time, if nothing worse. 7
With my improved rail connecting means on the other hand, while it is not nece ssary to take more time or care in laying the rails than is done at present, the rail-ends. are positively prevented from lateral movement relative to each other, and if one rail tips or cants sideways the adjacentrail must move correspondingly, and the wheel engaging edges of the rails remain in alinement at all times.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eifective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of Fig. 2 is a similar new of the device detached.

'It will therefore be seen that owing to the rigid and unitary character of the side web engaging flanges it will be impossible for. one rail to tip or cant without pulling the adjacent rail sideways also. The side edges of the rails and the intermediate head 4 are therefore always in proper alinenieiit with each other. 1
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device'as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein,
While this specification sets forth in cletail the present and preferred, construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may beresorted to I as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what transversely spaced I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
