CRANE AND THE LIKE.

This invention relates to cranes and similar devices in which a rotatable super-structure, including power operated raismg and lowering mechanism, is movably mounted upon a conveyance.
It is well known that in cranes, power shovels and the like, the super-structure including power operatedraising and lowering mechanism is mounted to be rotated in .a single position upon the conveyance. It 1s also known that the rotatably mounted super-structures, of such devices, are sometimes mounted so that they can be moved upon a pair of tracks carried by a conveyance, thereby increasing their operating area when the conveyance is in any given position. v
An object of my invention is to provide a device, of the character described, in which the super-structure is mounted so that it can be moved into substantially any position upon a conveyance, permitting the power operating raising and lowering mechanism to be operated in a maximum area when the conveyance is stationed in any given position. v
Another object of my invention resides in mounting a rotatable super-structure upon a conveyance so ythat it can be moved to any `desired operating position thereon by either longitudinal or transverse movement, or both.
Another object of my invention resides in the mechanism utilized for moving the rotatable super-structure transversely of the conveyance upon which it is mounted.'
These and other objects will appear hereinafter, and an exemplitication of one embodiment ot my invention appears in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a power crane movably mounted upon a railroad car;
Fig-2 is an end elevation of the same; Fig.3 is a plan vview of the supporting :frame for the super-structure, includlng the carrier base, and the mechanism for moving the same longitudinally and transversely, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view partly in section showing the mechanism for driving the supporting frame longitudinally upon. the railroad car.
Referring tothe drawings by characters of reference, 10 represents a conveyance which is herein illustrated as a at bottom open railroad car. This car is of a conventional type, being mounted upon bolster-s 11, to which are mounted'. axles 12 having supporting wheels 13 journalled thereto and adapted to roll upon railroad tracks 14. A pair of parallel rails are secured longitudinally upon the bottom, or floor, of the car and extend substantially .the entire length thereof.
Upon the car, or similar conveyance, I mount a raising .and lowering apparatus in such manner that it can be moved in a plurality of directions and is rotatable in any of such positions. I particularly desire that the movement of the apparatus should be suchthat it can be stationed in any position within the area of the ioor ot the car, thereby permitting a .maximum working radius for the crane which is desirable for the many classes of work which can be performed.
The raising and lowering apparatus, which is herein il .ustrated as a power operated crane, is provided with a supporting frame which includes a pair of spaced axles 16 having wheels 17 journalled upon adjacent ends thereof, a side frame member 18, and a carrier base which is secured between the two axles. The side framemember is formed of an angle: iron, and the reduced ends 9 of the axles extend therethrough and nuts 19 are threaded upon the reduced ends of the 'axles to rigidly secure the side frame member to the axles. A carrier base extends 'between the axles 16 and is formed of U- shaped side beams 20 and end beams 21, the e'nd and side beams being rigidly secured together by angle brackets 22 which are secured thereto by rivets or'y other similar means. A pair of transverse beams 8 are provided one adjacent and parallel to each end beam and are secured to the side beams -20 by angle brackets 22.

The central portion of such base provides a bearing -upon which the gea-r 4 is rotatably mounted, such gear being positioned beneath the super-structure. The carrier base forms a part of the supporting frame and directly carries the superstructure of the power shovel which lis mounted upon the circular track, the carrier base being movable lengthwise upon the axles on which it is mounted, and transversely relative to the railroad car.
The super-structure consists of a crane operating mechanism of conventional type which includes a frame 25 supported upon wheels 26 which are mounted to roll upon the circular track 24 of the supporting.
frame. The mechanism of the crane conn sists generally of a power plant 27 which operates gears 28 and 29 which are in mesh and which are connected to drums for respectively' operating the pivoted boom 30 and the clam bucket 31.
A shaft 32 extends downwardly'from the super-structure, and is rotated by a bevel gear secured to one end thereof, such gear being rotated by a bevel gear 71 mounted upon the same shaft as gear 29. This shaft 32 is provided at its lower end with a spur gear 33 whichis in mesh with the spur gear 4 mounted upon the base. The gear 4' is ro tated upon the base and has bevel gear teeth 72 extending therefrom which mesh with a bevel gear 36 which is keyed to a drive shaft 34. This shaft is mounted to rotate in bearin s 35 secured to beams 8 and 21 at one end o the carrier base. The outer end of this shaft is provided with a bevel gear 37 which meshes with a bevel gear 38 which -is sldably keyed upon one of the axles 16 Aof the supporting frame. This last mentioned gear is formed in two parts which are provided at one end with flanges which engage the flanged end of a sleeve 74, and is clamped thereover by bolts 75. The sleeve 74 is formed as a part of the bearing 23, and the gear 38 will therefore move with the carrier base, thereby maintainin .the gear 38 in mesh with the driving gear 3 in all positions of the carrier base. By means of the gearing and shafts described, the supporting frame can be longitudinally propelled by l,the engine upon the rails 15, the entire length of the car 10, or to any desired'position intermediate the ends thereof, suitable means being provided to lock the frame to the tracks when in desired longitudinal operating position, and suitabley clutch mechanism being provided to control the driving operation of the engine.-
The carrier base'is rovided with threaded bearings 39 secured to and projecting through one of the side beams 20 and apertured brackets 40 are secured to the end members 21 with the apertures in alignment with the bearings. Threaded rods 41 are rotatablyv secured .to the frame member 18 and extend through the threaded bearings 39 and apertured brackets 40. The threaded rods have sprockets 42 secured thereon and a chain 43 extends around the same, causing them to rotate simultaneously when one is operated. A shaft 44 extends through the frame member 18 adjacent to and parallel with one of the rods and is provided on its inner end with a sprocket 45 and on its outer end with a hand crank 46. A sprocket 47 is secured on one of the threaded rods, and a chain 48 extends around the sprockets 45 and 47. By turning the hand crank 46 the rods 41 can be rotated in either direction, causing the carrier base to.be moved transversely upon the axles 16.l The Super-structure is rotatably mounted upon the carrier base, which base can be moved into substantially any position upon the car floor by means of the longitudinal and transverse movements above described, thereby providing a maximum working radius for the crane aboutthe conveyance when it is in a desired position. It will also be seen that the super-structurey can be ositioned upon the car so that the clam buc et can operate at one side of the track without the superstructure extending into the path of trains which pass on the adjacent track, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Various changes may be made inthe de-I tails of the structure described without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a railroad car having a pair of longitudinally extending tracks mounted thereon, a wheeled supporting frame mounted to travel upon the tracks on said car, said frame includinga carrier base movable in another direction tothat in which the frame is moved upon said tracks, a power operated super-structure rotatabl secured upon said carrier frame, means drlven from said super-structure for ropelling said frame upon the tracks on sai ear, and mechanism for moving said carrier base relative to Said supporting frame.
2. In an apparatus of, the character de scribed the combination .of a conveyance having tracks mounted thereon; a super-struc-A ture including work performing mechanism; and a supporting frame for supporting said super-structureupon said conveyance, said frame including a pair of axles, wheels on said axles adapted to roll on said tracks, anda carrier base extendingbetween and slidably mounted upon said axles. l
3. In an apparatus of, the character described, the combination of a conveyance; a super-structure including power operated work performing mechanlsm, and a supporting frame comprising a pair of axles, wheels journalled upon the ends of the axles for moving said frame upon said conveyance, and a carrier base having vokes slidablv mounted upon said axles, said base supporting said super-structure and being movable lengthwise of said axles.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a conveyance' a supporting frame movable longitudinally upon said conveyance, said frame including a carrier base mounted therewith to be moved transversely of said conveyance; a superstructure rotatably secured upon said carrier base; and a pair of manually operated screw rods for moving said carrier base transversely relative to its supports.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a conveyance. a supporting frame movable longitudinally upon said conveyance, said frame including a carrier base mounted therewith to be moved transversely of said conveyance, and a superlstructure rotatably secured upon said carrier ase.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a conveyance, a supporting frame movable longitudinally upon said conveyance, said frame including a carrier base mounted therewith to be moved transversely of said conveyance, and a superstructure rotatably secured upon said carrier base, and means for moving the carrier base transversely relative to its support.
