UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
DIRECTIONAL TRAFFIC SIG-NAL.'
Application filed February The present invention relates to signals designed chiefly for traffic to designate the intention of a driver to make a turn to the right or to the lett or to reduce the speed ot a vehicle or to bring the same to a stop whereby to avoid an accident and obviate contnson, the signal being designed to be mounted conspicuously upon the vehicle so as to be readily seen from the rear or in Jfront.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature et the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an'embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion, and minorv details ot construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part ot the specitication,
Figure l is a front view of a signal embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a reverse view of the signal showing the letters formed by perforations instead of being stenciled,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line S of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are reierrcd to in the following description anddesignated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The signal comprises a casing l ot' sheet .metal or other suitable material which is subdivided by a vertical longitudinal partition 2 and horizontal partitions 3 forming a plnrality et pairs et compartments 3 and 3b horizontally arranged. The outer walls ot said compartments are provided with directionaldata cut therein either bv being stenciled as shown most clearly in Figure 1, or perforated as indicated in Figure 2. The partition 2 terminates some distance from the adjacent end of the casing and is cut 12, 1925. Serial No. 8330.
away as indicated at 4 to provide ample clearance for an electric bulb 5 opposite each pair of compartments 3a and 3b which is provided to illuminate the signal and clearly display the directional data which may be such as to indicate a left turn`r a right turn, slow and stop`r it being understood that each signal will be complete in itself and bear the proper designating data, the several signals being placed in vertical position and located conspicuously to insure observation from the rear and in front of the vehicle. A cap 6 closes one end of the casing and is provided with the electric bulb 5. the latter being included in a circuit (not shown) which is controlled by means of a switch. When ai plurality of signals are I provided a gang switch will be employed tor controlling the several light circuits so that the proper signal may be displayed to indicate the intention of the driver to make a turn either to thel right or to the lett, or to reduce the speed or" the vehicle or to bring the same to a stop.
What is claimed is A signal of the character speciiied comprising an elongated casing closed at all sides and at one end, whereby one end only will be open, a vertical partition within said casingl having flanges at its top and bottom cirectly engaging the top and bottom walls of the casing, transverse partitions extending from the vertical partition and intimately engaging the side walls of the casing, said partitions providing signal spaces, the side walls of the casing beingdirectly pert'orated opposite the spaces, the pertorations alone constituting signals, a cap removably telescoping over the open end ot the casing,
lamps carried by the cap extending into the casing, and the vertical partition at the adjacent end being cut away intermediate the transverse partitions to accommodate the lamps whereby each lamp will illuminate two spaces.
ln testimony whereof I allix mv signature,
GEORGE TUGNoT.
