ILLUIJIINATEID SIGNAL.
ineaeee.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July M, 1922.
Application filed march 31, 1921. Serial No. M7381.
T 0 all whom it may coriioern:
Be it known that l, CHRISTIAN A. CHRIS- rorrnnson, a citizen of the Llnited States, and resident or St. Paul, county oi Ramsey, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminated Signals, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to signals, and has as an object the provision of a signal with letters uniformly illuminated by two lamps each of which may show a danger signal in addition to illuminating the letters, all of said signals being faced in the same direction.
An illustrative embodiment of the inven tion is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 i Fig. 1;
" is vertical transverse section on Fig. 0 a line 3---? oif Fig. 4/; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View oi a shield.
To illustrate the signal there are shown two lamps 10, 11, preferably having oil reservoirs l2, 13, to operate tor long periods ol time without c"teution. Each lamp is shown as provided with a socket, as 14, 15, to be placed over supports.
The signal 16 to be illuminated. which may comprise letters cut out of sheet metal 17, backed by translucent glass 18, is shown as forming the front of a casing 19 extending between the lamps l0, 11. The ends of the casing may be connected to the lamp bodies and serve to unite them. 1. referably the front panel of the casing bear nal is hinged to the casing, as at Q0, 21 being supplied to keep the front and handles for manipulation hinged panel.
The chamber of the casing 19 is open to the bodies of the lamps, which are apertured as indicated at 27, 28. Preferably a transparent screen 29, 30, is interposed between the chamber of the casing and each lamp to prevent smoke from entering the casing or air currents, which might circulate through the casing, from interfering with the draft of the lamp.
latches closed, of the A series of reflectors, as 23, 24, 25 and 26, are placed within the casing 19, one being associated with each character of the signal, and so arranged as to reflect the light from one of the lamps directly upon such charactor.
in the embodiment of the invention as shown in the drawings, the signal consists of the word Stop, and as this word is composed of four letters a corresponding number of reflectors are provided in the casing. As no light rays thrown directly from the lamp burner upon any of these letters, each is illuminated only by means of the refiector associated with it, and suitable relectors being used the illumination oi all of the letters is uniform.
in addition to the signal carried by the casing 19, each oi the lamps may be provided with a lens at 31, 32, facing in the same direction. as the casing signal and pretcrably being given the usual red color. A shield or hood, as 33, may be clamped over each oi the lei s Si. 32, thus rendering them visible only from a lace view and preventing the colored rays from a lateral diffusion which would tend to decrease the visibility of the signal. carried by the casing.
lliany changes may be made in the physical einhliment oi my invention without departing com the spirit thereof.
claim as my inventioni. A signal comprisin in combination, a casing, a. lamp at each end oi said casing adapted to illuminate its interior, a signal in the front oi said casing out of range of the ect rays from sail lamp and comprisi pluralitv ot' c -aohanons characters, casing each arys from one of rays upon one ial characte s, and signals separate first-named signal, each illuminatect rays trom one of saic lamps. Bi. signal comprising. in c mbination, a pair of lamps. diaphanous signal characters t s d lamps adjacent thereto and out e oi direct rays therefrom, and means to separately illuminate each of said characters by reflected light from one of said lamps.
