Application filed March 8, 1925. Serial No. 12,952.
This invention relates to seals and its principal object is to provide a seal which cannot be opened or broken without detection and which can be quickly and'readily applied to a car door or milk can or other device to be sealed.
This invention further contemplates a seal which embodies a casing and a resilient shackle to be slipped into the casing and interlocked therewith and cannot be extracted therefrom without being cut or otherwise mutilated.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists '15 in the novel combination of elements, ar-
rangement of parts and operation, to be hereinafter specifically. referred to, illustrated in the accompanying drawings,and pointed out in the appended claim. In the drawin s: Figure 1 is a %ragmentary elevation of a freight car door having the seal applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a perspective of the device. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the plane at right angles. to Figure 3. Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the device is. formed. 80 Referring to the drawings in detail wherein corresponding-characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a length of bendable metal formed with pairs of divergent wings 6 and further provided with extensions 7 and 7 one of which terminates in a hook element 9 while the other constitutes the shackle-f These wings 6 terminate in V-shaped tabs 9 which are adapted to be folded to overlie the ends of the wings when the blank is folded to hold ing or blank, shown in Figure 5, the blank is folded on a transversely disposed line indicated at 8, while the wings are folded on the broken lines and such wings being arranged in overlapping relation. The tabs 9' are then bent upon themselves to overlie the overlapping wings and to hold these parts assembled as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
As shown the free end of the shackle is formed with a substantially V-shaped resilient hook element 10 adapted for interlocking engagement with ,the hook element. 9. This hook element 10 is formed by bending the free end of the shackle upon itself asiat 11 and then bending the extremities upon itself at 12.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire tohave 'it understood that such changes may be made in the form, construction, arrangement of parts and operations as will not depart from the spirit ofthe invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is'claimed is- A seal formed from a single strip of metal and comprising pairs of divergent wings, extensions included in said seal, a hook formed on one of said extensions, V-shaped tabs extending from the ends of one pair of divergent wings,'said-wings being folded With the hook toprovide a casing, said V- shaped tabs being adapted to overlie the ends of the wings to hold the parts assembled and a resilient hook element formerl on the other of said extensions and being adapted. to receive by the hook first mentioned within the casing for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLlAM BOUSQUET.
