M- L- JENNINGS LIFTER Filed May 192s INVENTOR ATTOR N EY Patented Oct. 19, 1926 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LIFTER.
Application filed May 24,
This invention relates to culinary implements and particularly to pan and pie plate lifters.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a pie plate lifter that can be etliciently and expeditiously applied to a pie plate with a pie therein to pick up the same and support it when putting a pie into or taking the same out of an oven, with the re sult that there is no danger of burning the user.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lifter that is formed with a novel handle so constructed to prevent bending under the weight of the articles lifted.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lifter forming the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the lifter applied to a pie plate with a pie therein.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the application of the lifter.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be noted that the lifter is formed from a pair of strands of wire bent to provide forwardly extending arms 1 and 2 spaced a sufficient distance apart to engage the side edges of a pan or pie plate as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. From the inner ends of the arms 1 and 2 the wires are bent inwardly toward each other as at 3 to provide the bight portion of the U-shaped configuration as shown and thence the portions of the wires are twisted upon themselves to form the elongated innermost portion l of the handle. From the outer end of the elongated innermost portion 4 the portions of the wires are bent or curved reversely upon themselves 1926. Serial No. 111,341.
as at 5 to provide rod members 6 arranged parallel with the elongated portion 4; and upon opposite sides thereof and the ends of the rod members 6 are secured to the bight portion through the instrumentality of solder or other securing means 7.
From the natural inherent resiliency of the wire, it will be apparent that the arms 1 and 2 will adjust themselves to various size pie plates or the like, and by twisting the wires as at 4 and extending the same upon opposite sides of the twisted portion, it will be obvious that a strong handle has been provided which will not readily bend under the weight of the articles lifted.
it is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is a 1. A lifter of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped plate engagin means, an elongated portion extending from the U-shaped engaging means, rods formed with the outer ends of the elongated portion and arranged parallel with and upon opposite sides thereof, and said rods being secured to the U-shaped plate engaging means and together with the elongated portion provide a handle.
2. A pie plate lifter formed from strands of wire arranged to provide a pair of substantiaily parallel arms bent upon the1nselves to provide the bight portion of a U- shaped plate engaging means, an elongated twisted portion extending from the U-shaped plate engaging means, and portions of the wire from said elongated twisted portion being curved reversely upon themselves and thence arranged parallel with and upon opposite sides of the elongated portion, to be secured to the bight portion of the U-shaped plate engaging means.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARGARET LETTIE JENNINGS.
