Description

Jan. 1, I929. 1,697,733
w. A. POOLE SANITABY SHIELD Filed May 14, 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented .lan. 1, 1929,
WILLIAM A. POOLE, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
SANITARY SHIELD.
Application filed May 14,
This invention relates to a sanitary shield adapted to be disposed in front of the face of the wearer so as to avoid contamination either of the operator or of the person near whom he may be standing.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient sanitary shield which will effectively shield the eyes, nose and mouth of the wearer and is adapted to be readily supported in position either from the ears of the wearer or from the eyeglass frames.
A further object is the provision of a sanitary shield which is simple and economical to construct and preferably made of a light, transparent material which will detract as little as possible from the operators appearance.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which Figure l is a further form of the device adapted to be mounted or clipped on an ophthalmoscope.
Figure 2 is a front View of the upper portion of an ophthalmoscope having the shield shown in Figure 1 applied thereto, the shield being broken away.
Figure 8 is a side of the same with the shield in section.
The form of the invention shown in the drawings is a preferred form, although it is understood that modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts and in the character of the materials used may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in. the appended claims.
The shield comprises a plate or flexible sheet 10 preferably of light, flexible, transparent material. This is adapted to be'supported before the face of the operator in front of his nose and mouth, either to protect him from contamination or to protect others.
The shield shown in Figure 1 is for use wit-h an ophthalmoseope or like instrument. It is shown applied to an ophthalmoscope in Fi ures 2 and 3. The shield 10 consists of a sheet of flexible transparent material having a notch or slot 27 in its upper edge and 1926. Serial nmioarzo.
provided on its inner face with the bars 25 and 26. The bar 25 extends across the notch or slot 27 and its purpose and the purpose of the notch or slot will be hereinafter set forth. The bar 26 has its ends so secured to the sheetthat the shieldwill be held curved as shown, and the said bar is provided with a spring clip 28. The shield is applied to the ophthalmoscope A by passing the upper end under the bar 25 until the said bar rests upon the lens disk at as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and then the clip 28 is engaged with the instrument below said disk at, where the shield will be securely held on the instrument.
It will be seen that when the shield is applied, the notch or slot 28 is directly opposite the mirror of the instrument and offers no obstruction to the mirror. The notch or slot also causes the upper end of the shield to fit snugly on the instrument. It will also be seen that the shield is held away from the lower part of the instrument, so as not to interfere with the hand of the operator grasping the instrument.
It is to be understood, of course, that this sheet of material is preferably to be disposed entirely in front of the face, covering the mouth, nose and eyes of the operator and may be attached in any suitable manner to surgical instruments of any kind, technical. instruments and appliances or any other device used before the face of a person who needs such a. screen or shield to protect him from contamination.
l/Vhat I claim. is:
l. A shield, comprising a curved flexible transparent body having a notch in its upper edge and provided on its inner face with a bar crossing the notch and below said bar with a clip, the bar and clip servingto secure the shield to an ophthalmoscope or like instrument.
2. A shield comprising a curved. flexible transparent body having a notch in its'upper edge and provided on its inner face with two transverse bars, one below. the other, the upper bar extending across the notch and the lower bar provided at its center of length, with a spring clip. l
