EYE PROTECTOR.

Be it known that I, MARTIN C. lVHELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wvyandotte and 6 State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Eye Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

Y My invention relates to improvements in eye protectors. It is particularly adapted for use for the protection of the eyes of a person at work adjacent to a grinding wheel,

and also for protection of the eyes of a person operating an electric or acetylene welding apparatus, or from the glare of any strong light.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel eye protector of the kind described, which is simple, cheapto make, durable, light, not liable to get out of order,

which can be readily and quickly applied to and removed from its position of use, and which is efficient in operation.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The lower ends of the arms of the U shaped portion of the frame are connected by a transverse brace wire 8 having two eyes 9.

tions 7 through the eyes 9 respectively, and their end portions 10 then extend rearwardly and curve toward and cross each other. The portions 10 are adapted to be spread apart and passed around and made to em brace the neck of the person.

A vertical transverse plate 11 extends across the front side of the U shaped portion of the frame and has ears 12 bent over the portion 2 of the frame. The ends of the plate 11 are provided respectively with two ears 13 which respectively extend around to the rear of the arms 1. At the rear of the plate is a transparent shield la, over the rear side of which extend the ears 12 and 13. The plate 11 may have at its lower edge an upwardly extending flange 15, which overlaps the shield lil. The plate 11 has a transverse hole 16 therethrough, over which the shield 14 extends.

Side guards 17 overlap the front side of the plate 11, and extend rearwardly therefrom, and are secured thereto by means of bolts 18, which extend respectively through the ears 12 and 13, and through the shield 14, plate 11, and side guards 17. The bolts 18 are respectively provided with nuts 19.

The shield 14 may be of any suitable transparent material, such as mica, glass, or celluloid. When the protector is to be used, to protect the eyes from glare of strong light. the shield may be of blue, amber or other color suitable for the purpose.

To mount the protector in operative position, the portions 10 are spread apart and slipped rearwardly, so as to embrace the neck of the wearer, with the portions 3, 5 and 6 resting on the shoulders, and the downwardly extending portions 7 resting on the chest. The hole 16 will now be disposed forward of the persons eyes, and the shield 14. will extend transversely in fl'ront of the eyes, and will protect them from strong glare and from flying particles. The guards 17 will protect the eyes from particles projected past the ends of the shield 14e. To remove the protector, it is but necessary to draw it forwardly.

My improved eye protector is sanitary, affords good ventilation, and enables unsanitary and uncomfortable goggles to be dispensed with.
