" Application ined apra 14, 1926. serial mfiorsso.
This invention relates `to an iniprovement in registers, Vand has for its object the pro-l vision ofv an improved mounting for the Ishutter member so arranged that the parts can` be readily `and accurately adjusted. to compensate for wear; The ifrictional surfaces of the pivot are made of dissimilar metals so chosen as to insure a smooth pivotal action and also to produce a thermostatic action to increase the frictional resistance of the pivot when the parts become heated thereby helping to maintain the shutter at the desired position when heat is issuing from the register'.
While I have disclosed a preferred einbodiment of the invention it will be clear that various changes and modilications can be made Without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a register embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 Vis a fragmentarysection on line ef- 2 of Fig. i; y
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the pivotal arrangement Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; .Fig 5 lis a detail view showing the pivot 1n. 4
p Referring more particularly to the drawings, the grating member 10 is detachably lfastened by screws 11 'to the casing 12 adapted to be set into the heat duct. The passage of heat from the heat duct through the register is controlled by the shutter member 13 which is pivotally mounted. on the rear side of the grating member 10 Iin a manner now to be described.
A steel joint member 14 is riveted at its lower end to the shutter member 13 and carries integral ears 15 and 16. One end of member 14 projects through the grating member and is bent Ato form the operating lever 17. A steel joint member 18 is riveted to the rear side ofthe grating member and carries an integral strap bent to form a barrel portion 19 and a projecting'tongue 20. In assembling the parts the barrel portion is inserted between the ears 15 and 16,
` and a brass pivot pin 21 is inserted through openings in the ears coinciding with the opening in the barrel portion 19. rIhe opening in ear 16 is hexagonal to receive a hexagonal shoulder 22 formed on the pivot pin to` hold the pin against rotation in the ears 15 and 16. After the joint is assembled the pin 21 is riveted over` as at 2? tomaintainr the parts'together. A
An adjustingscrew 24 is setinto an opening 25 in the grating member and .passing through an opening 26 in the joint member 18 screw threaded `.into the tongue 20 at 2 It will be evident that by turning down the adjustingv screw 24 the strap member 19 `will be tightened upon the pivot pin 21. Then the parts are in proper relation the shutter may be moved by lever 17 to any desired angular position to control the amount of heat issuing from the register. Since Ithe friction is produced by steel moving over brass the pivotal movement Will be smooth` and quiet. Brassl has a higher coeflicient of expansion than steel and hence as the parts become heated the brass will expand faster than the steel to thereby increase lthe rictional resistance of the pivot and insure the maintenance of the shutter at the desired angular position while heat is issuing from the register. It should also be noted that the adjustable strap member completely surrounds the pivot pin and forms a very eilicient adjusting means.
I claim 1. A register comprising a casing, a shutter, a pair of up-standing ears carried by the shutter near the center of one edge of the shutter, a pivot pin mounted in the ears, and an adjustable strap carried by the casing and surrounding the pivot pin to adj ustably support the shutter. l
2. In a register, a grating secured to casing, a shutter, a joint member fastened to the shutter and having integral ears, a pivot pin non-rotatively mounted in said ears, and an adjustable strap carried by the grating and surrounding the pivot pin.
3. Ina register, a grating secured to a casing, a shutter, a joint member fastened to the shutter and carrying a pivot pin of relatively expansible material, and a strap of less eXpansible material carried by the grating and surrounding the pivot pin.
4. In a register, a grating secured to a casing, a joint member fastened to the grating and having a strap bent to form a barrel, a shutter, a joint member secured to the shutter and having integral ears, a pivot pin passing through the barrel and non-rotatively mounted, in the ears, and menneI for adjusting the-frictional Contact between the barrel und the pivot pin.
5. In :L register7 a grating secured `to u easing, n joint member fastened to the gruting und having o, Strap bent to form a burrel und a projecting tongue, u shutter, n second joint member secured to the shutter und having integral earsyu pivot pin pussing through the barrel und non-rotatively mounted in the eu1's,`end an adjusting screw passing throught-he first-named joint member und threaded into the tongue.
6. In a register, a,` grating detachabiy se- `Cured to a easing, a joint member of materiul having n relatively low coefficient of expuuiou fastened to the grating und having; u strap bent to form a barrel und u projeet ing tongue, u shutter, u second joint member secured to the Shutter und having integral curs, a pivot pinof material having a higher coefiieient of expansion `than the joint inem ber passing through the burrel und non-1'0- tntively mounted in the ears, an adjusting screw passing through the first-named joint member und threaded into the tongue, said adjustingiscrowbeing accessible from the exterior of the registeig, und an operating lever formed integral with the second joint member. u
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
