` C. S. THOMAS TOOL COUPLI NG DEVICE Filed Feb. '26, 1927 IN VEN TOR. CHARLES /Sf THOMAS l ATTORNEY Patented-.Deel` 18, 1928.
i UNITED STATES,
i TooL-oo'UrL'ING DEVICE.
" Appncation'fued February 26, 1927'.` serial No. 171g222.
My linvention relatesfto `coupling devices, more particularly to coupling devices for tools such as braces and 4bitsfor vthe'v like, and thev objects of my inventionk are: first,
- to provide a'device ofthis class by which-'aA minimum of time is 'necessaryL to vrigidly secure and release tool-members; second, to
provide a device l' fof :this class which willr` Vkeep thetool rigidly secured, evenr when under `heavy strain; third, to provide a device of this classwhich iscompact, sturdyl and economical of construction; fourth, `to provide a novellyconstructed coupling device, and fifth, tovprovide a` device of this, yclass vwhich is durable, efficient` in vits vnac-x and which will not readily deteriorate' tion, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter describedv in "dot-ail' and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the 'accompanying' drawings and vto `the char;- "ac'l'ers of'referenc'e, whichform a part v this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a :longitudinal sectional viewV of my tool coupling device through 1&1 Vof Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of my device at right angles to that of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional Aview through 3-3 ofFig. 1; Fig. l is a rear end view of the tool, and'Fig. 5'isa front end tool. removed. y I f Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout theseveral views of the drawings.-i
, The brace member 1, tool member 2, tool securing lsleeve 8, spring .member 4, and guide'member `5, Vconstitute the principal parts and portionsof my tool coupling den vice.
The brace member lis the type, except or'the end portion, as best shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings, and `is either power or hand driven. Near the eX- tremity of the brace `Inember'l is a hole 1a at right angles tothe surface of the brace member. `From this hole to the extremity of view oi mv tool holding device with the i the brace member akV-shaped slot`1b is out out with its `apex near the center of thehole,
- as shown best in Fig. 1'.v of the drawings.`

A sleeve-shaped securing member 3 ispslidably mounted on they 65 brace 1 and secures the tool and ybrace shank together. v This member is provided with a square aperture 3aAv at its extremity, which p `receives thesquare portion of the tool. This aperture merges into ahole, which fitsl snugly aroundthe lbrace inemberjl. f ThisL g -1,695,564f- PATENT OFFICE.,

which fit" in slots 51 of the member 5and keep the spring from pushing the vmember .3 too far. Itl will .be noted vthat pins vorlugs,v
whichare an integral rpartof the'member 3*, may be used in place ot the screws 3e. `The lugs or screws 39 and the slots 5lr also serve i the purpose of transferringthe torsional strain of the securing member.v and the joint between the brace and tool to the outer guide member 5.` The member y5 is cylindrical in` shape, covers the spring l and aportion of the securing member 3,- and `is `closed at 153,. `wherep1t is'welded or otherwise `secured to ,i

Though I have shown andv described. a particular construction, combination and i arrangement of `parts and portions,` I do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the'scope of'inyv in- Vention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims. f Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asv new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.:
l. A device of the classY described, including a brace shank, atool, a cutout portion in said shank, `notched portions in said tool adapted to litin said cutout portions of said shank, and rigid and shift-able sleeve means non-rotatably mounted on said Vbrace shank andi sliiitable into noirrotatable enV gagementr `Withsaid tool for `rigidly securF ing said shank `tosaid tool.
2L A device of? heelass described, including a brace shank, altool, a cutout portion `in said shank, notched portionsinsaid tool adapted to fit in said cntoutportions of said shank, means` for rigidly securing .said shank to said tool, `said securing means consisting of a sleeve slidably and non-rotatably mounted on saidishank'and adapted to .fit over the joint between and engage both `said shank and tool, and resilient means `tending to hold saidV securing means` in operating position.
3". A device of the clase described, fin` cluding a brace shank, a tool, a joint be- 4tween said tool and shank locked only againstitorsiona'l and end nriovementictEv the tool in relation to the shank, and aA slidably non-rotatably mounted sleeve, said sleeve being adapted to slide over saidjoint 'and engage both shanhand tool and prevent all movement of the tool in relation to the shank.
4. Adevice of the classdeseribed, including a brace shank, a tool, a joint between said" tool and shank locked only against torsional and end movement of thetool in relation to the shank, a slidably mounted sleeve, said sleeve being adapted to slide over said joint and engage bothishankand tool, resilient means tending to hold said sleeve over said joint, a casing and guiding means rigidly secured` to' said shank, and connecting` means between said casing and sleeve member,
sleeve member in relation to the casing.
5. A: device of the class described, includ ing a brace shank, a tool, a dovetail joint between said 'tool and shank locked only against torsional and Vendmovenient,of the tool in relation to the shank, a slidably mounted sleeve, said sleeve being adapted to slider over said joint and engageboth brace shank and tool and prevent all movement of the tool in relation tothe shank, and a sleeve rigidly `secured to` said shank in which saidslidably mounted sleeve is re- `ciprocally mounted. i
6. In a device oi the class described, aV brace shank havinga-,dovetailrecessat itsl adapted to lit said recess, a` pair of `tele-V scopic members positioned around said shank and limited againstseparatiomone of said `meiribers being rigidly secured to said i shank and the other adapted to slide over the joint between saidV shank and said tool, and a compression spring positioned Within said telescopic members adapted normally to.` force said :one ytelescopic `member over said joint.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand atv San Diego, California, this 17 th day ofv February, 1927 CHARLESS. THOMAS.
