5 Application as were, 1927. Serial n5. 2554, 365.
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in fusees or signalling torches.
One object of my inventionis to providea fusee formed of separable sections, so that the fusee, when not assembled for use, can
, be readily carriedinthe pocket of a coat or other garment of 'a trainman, aviator,;boat;-
man, watchman'oi' other operative so as to be available for immediate j n Another object of my inventio" vide in combination Witha knock down fuses a safety carrying case in which the sections of the fusee may be packedto protect them from any injury or the deteriorating effect of air and moisture and which will also serve as a handle or holder for the fusee when ,signaling.
1 With these objects in view and With'the in tention of securing otheradvantages Which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists of the featuresof construction and combination of parts described in the specification particularly pointed out'in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective'view of my safety carrying :case-with the fusee sections packed therein; Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the top or lid removed;"'Fig.- 3 is a section on line 3- 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on,
line 4-4, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a View showing 7 the fusee assembled andmounted on the case,
so that the case may be used as a holder for the fusee When it is lit l Again referring to the drawings, 5 represents the separable combustible sections of my fusee, which are formed of theusual ma terials. Each section is made complete in it? self and the upper *end thereof is provided with the usual fulminate or ignition material '6, On the lower end of each of the sections 5 is arranged a sleeve 8 which extends below the end thereon The projecting portionof thesleeve 8 is designed-to slip over and snugly engage the upper'portion of another section of the fusee forming a separ-.
able but firm and the sections.
Thebaseof the fusee is generallymade of a piece of wood 9' and is-provided with a positive connection between spike 10, in the customary manner. The upper end of the base 9 is adapted to be firmly engaged by thepro ecting end of the sleeve 8 on the. lowermost" section '5," 1 V I is "to proshelf or rack.
in Fig. 5 'andwhen thus'asseinbled, instead of mounting t on tl1e"c'ase,1t may be dropped or thrown from a train and Will remain intact after striking theground, the same as a one piece-fuses h fldy' improved safetyfcase is shown at 12 and'niay be made off any suitable material. The dimensions ofthecase12are such that the separated sections of'the fusee'may be snugly pacl ed therein and easily removed therefrom.
In the sides of the case 12 and near the top thereof and inline with each other are formed two openings 14. These openings 14:
form sockets for the reception of the spike 10 in the base 9. After the'fusee is assem bled the spike 10 may be inserted through I the openings 14 in the case 12 and the case can then be used. as a handle or holder for the fusee whensignalling.
A' tube 15 extends transverselyof the case '12 and the ends of said tube are mountedin,
the openings 14L. The tube 15 prevents moisture or any foreign material from entering the spike 10 through both openings 14.
The case '12 is provided with a closelyfitting cover or lid16 which may be hinged thereto in the-usual manner or may be made entirely removable. As shovvn the lid is of the slip over type and in order that it'imay be do The fusee-is shown completely assembled i 30 i I the case 12 through the openings 1 11 and'also 1 serves as a guide to facilitate the passage of held securely in the case the cover or lid is provided with small lugsor bosses18, which engage with the openings 14- and also with an eyelet 19 which engages a small boss 20 on the case 12.
Onthe insideof-the lid1'6 is placed a quanti'ty of the ignitionmaterialnecessary for bustible sections 5, of theyfu'see.
striking fire-with the fulminate on the com- I The advantages of my knockedown fuseea andcarrying case will be readily appreciated.-. An occasion callingfor the use of a signal torch or fusee s generally caused by somesudden emergency, and a slight delay or loss of time often involves disastrous results. Owing to therelative cumbersome size of the presentone piece fusee it is customaryvto keep'theifusee in some definite place,' as on a y When the need for a'fusee arises much valuable time is'lost in locating I and getting-it. Myfusee in its carryingcase will fit into any pocket, so that any trainman, aviator or other operative, who may have call to use a fusee, can carry a fusee on his person .without any inconvenience and have it ready for immediate use.
The making of the fusee in separable sections afi'ords other advantages. For instance, the sections may be made so that some sections will burn longer than other sections and one section can be ignited at a time according to the length of time it is desired to display the signal. Also ifan aviatorwishes to give a signal he can select the section or sections of the fusee which will burn out before reaching the ground and thereby avoid fire hazards. Again the sections may be made of difierent materials so that they will show various colors when being burned and a fusee can then be assembledso that it will show a shecession of colors according to some predete'n 20 mined code.
WVhat I claim is v 1. A fusee formed of independent sections of combustible material, means for connect- 7 ing the sections together so as to form a continuous fusee and a carrying case for holding the sections when separated.
2. A fusee comprisin a plurality of independent sections of com ustible material and means for connecting said sections together comprising a sleeve adapted to engage the lower end of one section and the upper end of another section. i
3. The combination with a knock-down fusee of a carrying case therefor, adapted to receive the separated sections of thefusee, said case being provided with a socket forming openin s to receive the spike of the fuses when the 51sec is assembled for use.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM C. MoMUR-RAY.
