Application filed January 8, 1927. SerialNo. 159,858.
The present invention relates to paper fastening devices, and particularly to thumb tacks.
The invention has for its object to provide a thumb tack which is adapted to be easily and accurately centered over the point where it is desired to apply the tack, and to provide a thumb tack which can be manufactured at small cost.
The accompanying drawing illustrates two forms in which the invention may be embodied.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a perspective View, a plan view and a side elevation of one form of the invention; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form.
The thumb tack illustrated by Figs. 1, 2 and 3 consists of ametal strip having a circular portion 10, a straight inwardly projecting portion 11, and a downwardly extending portion 12 terminating in asharp point. The strip may consist of steel wire, or brass, and preferably the circularportion andradial portion 11 are flattened while the downwardly extending portion 12 is left cylindrical with the extremity formed into a sharp point. Normally the radial portion 11 extends upwardly at an angle to the plane of the circular portion 10 and the tip of the downwardly extending portion 12 lies in a plane somewhat above the plane of the flat bottom side of portion 10 and occupies a position at the center otthe circular portion 10, whereby the tack can be freely moved over the surface of the paper and accurately centered over the exact point where it is desired to insert the point. 7
The modification shown by Fig. 4 differs only in configuration from the construction above described. In this modification the body portion of the thumb tack is in the form oi an isosceles triangle, or an equilateral triangle, having sides 13, Id and 15. At an apex of the triangle, the part 16 integral with side 15 extends inwardly and upwardly to the axis of the triangle where it is bent downwardly and terminates in a sharp point. The free end of side 13 is beveled, so that when the inwardly extending portion 16 is forced downwardly into the plane of the triangle ta-cl: of simple and cheap-construction and one that can be accurately and easily centered over the exact point where .it is desired to insert the tack.
Now havin particularly describcd'my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: V
1. A thumb tack comprising a strip of metal bent into the form of a geometrical figure and having a portion projecting inwardly and upwardly at an angle to the plane of the figure to a point substantially in the axis of said figure and extending downwardly from said point and having a sharp extremity in the plane of said figure, said inwardly extending portion being resilient.
2. A thumb tack consisting of an integral strip, of metal bent into'the form of a circle and having a portion projecting inwardly and upwardly to a point substantially in the axisot the circle and bent downwardly from said point and terminating in a sharp extremity in the plane of said circle, said portion being resilient.
In testimony whereof'I hereunto aflix my signature.
