GROUND Box; I
Original application filed December 22, 1923, Serial No. 682,235 Divided and this application filed June 8 1925.
An object of my invention is to provide a ground box with a toggle joint of a novel kind in connection with switches for street railways and the like. I Ieretofore a toggle has been employed which is spring pressed so as to keep a switch point rail at one limit or the other of its movement and prevent its stopping at dead center. A toggle embodying my invention is articulated'so as to g1ve an additional movement to the member which is directly driven by the compression spring so as to allow a stronger spring action to be obtained than is normally the case with the attendant greater security.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for a quick replacement of the bearing and fulcrum means of the lever whenwear develops. This and other objects are accomplished by my invention, one embodiment of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth. 7
For a more particular description of my invention, reference is to be had 'to themcompanying drawings, forming a part hereof,
in which v Figure l'is a plan View of a ground box embodying my invention. 7
Figure'Q. is an enlarged plan view of the fulcrum and ournal shown in Figure 1. I
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
The switch throwing lever 6 has a. clownwardly extending fulcrum 7 which is suitably journaled against a base block 8 which is preferably integral with the casing 2 and this block 8 is slotted to receive a bolt 9 that holds a journal'jaw 10 which has its other end resting against a projection 11 which runs parallel to the part 8, but slightly separated therefrom, as shown in Figure 1. This jaw 10 can be adjusted by a nut on the bolt'S) so as to bear against a large bushing 7 in which the. fulcrum 7 may move vfreely. The jaw 10 can be firmly clamped against this bushing by means of bolt 9 and at the same time bushing may be easily renewed by loosening the nut at the back of bolt 9 swinging jaw 10 away from bushing and lifting bushing out. I
While I am aware that other means have been made for the quick replacement of the bushing of a ground box lever, they have been found to be wanting in respect to per- Serial No. 35,766.
manency ife. under the very severepounding by the force exerted by the plunger and the resistance offered by the switch point, the bolt and clamp means become loosened. In my device where a superior leverage is effected by reason of holding jaw 10 at its extreme ends, the entire device remains fixed until removed for replacement of the bushing.
Attention is called to the fact that by my.
arrangement the maximum amount of clamp- 111g force for the space available is procured.
It is even greatly'superior to using bolts at each end of aw 10 for'securing it to part 8. Please note the fulcrum pointof 10 as being at the most remote point against an i absolutely solid member 11 which is cast integrally with the ground part and part 8. A further point of superiority in my device resides in the fact that even though two bolts were used, it wouldnecessarily place the second one in close proximity to. the adjacent wall of the ground part thereby not giving sufiicie-nt room for an ordinary wrench to operate a standard nut of the bolt to the desired I claimv is:
ing a lever connected to the switch and fulcrumed in a bushing carried by an integral ground box constructed with a grooved .block and a lug projecting from one wall of the ground box, agrooved aw with one end abutting said lug andthe other end formed for the reception of a bolt, a bushing interposed in the grooves of said jaw and said block between the ends of said'jaw and a bolt so Having thus described my invention, what 1. In a switch throw mechanism. comprislocated and disposed as to clamp the bushing between the jaw and the block.
2. In a switch throw mechanism compris- 1 ing a: lever connected to the switch and fulcrumed n a bushing carried by an integral ground box constructed with a grooved block and a lug projecting from one wall of the I I ground box, with the adjacent bottom area, closed, a grooved jaw with one end abutting i said lug and the other end formed forthe reception of a bolt, a bushing interposed in t 5 the grooves of said jaw and said block between the ends of said jaw and a, bolt so located and disposed as to clamp the bushing between thejaw and the block, said bushing'being so disposed as to haveits lower end closed by said adj acentbottom area.
Intestimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day ofApril, 1925. i i
. ROBERT ML ROBINSON.
