Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 23, 1914.
Application filed March 27, 1914. Serial No. 827,518.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ROBERT ADAMS and Bonner HARVEY ADAMS, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at 3 and 5 Emerald street, Theobalds Road, London, W. (3., England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Springs and Checks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door springs and a is the box, 6 the door pivot,@ the spring,
and (Z is the check device. A pair of arms 6 on the door pivot have pivoted thereto a curved link or coupler f the other end of which is pivoted at g to the short arm 72. of a two-armed-check lever i. The check lever is mounted upon a pivot 70 which is fixed in the box and supported at its upper end by a hearing plate Z which forms part of the cross plate m. The end of the long arm of the check lever is pivoted to the piston rod n of the check device (2, the check lever being preferably formed bifurcated, so as to allow the curved link or coupler f to work between the arms. The action plate or lever 0 of the spring is pivoted to a connecting link p the upper end of which is bifurcated at g and pivoted to the check lever at 1' so that the bifurcated end of the connecting link 29 works outside the check lever i as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
On opening a door fitted with the above described spring and check device the rotation of the pivot b transmits motion by means of the arms 6 and link or coupler f to the check lever i which in turn communicates motion to the check piston rod 'n and connecting link 39 thereby withdrawing the piston rod of the check device and simultaneously operating the action plate or lever 0 to compress the spring 0.
The flange of the box is preferably formed with a groove or sunk portion 8 adapted to receive a suitable packing or water-tight material so that when the cross plate at and top plate t are screwed in position they rest upon the inner rim u and lugs o of the box thereby compressing the packing in the groove, the lugs 42 serving to support the edges of the plates against the compressing action of the attaching screws. It will be obvious that any other form of grooved packing may be employed.
The pivot bearing in the cross plate may be rendered water-tight by the application of a dished plate to as shown in Fig. 3, which plate surrounds the door pivot and is adapted to contain and compress a suitable ring packing w when the dished plate is secured to the cross plate by screws or other fixing device.
\Ve claim 1. In a combined door spring and check the combination with a helical spring and a check device arranged side by side in a box, an action lever pivoted in the box and bearing against one end of the spring, a door pivot and an arm on the door pivot, of a twoarmed lever pivoted in the box, a curved link pivoted to the door pivot arm and to the short arm of said two-armed lever, a pivotal connection between the check piston rod and the end of the long arm of the twoarmed lever, and a connecting link having one end thereof pivoted to the action lever and the other end to the two-armed lever between its fulcrum pivot and its pivotal connection with the check piston rod, as set forth.
2. In a combined door spring and check, the combination with a helical spring and a check device arranged side by side in a box, an action lever pivoted in the box and hearing against one end of the spring, a door pivot, and a pair of arms on the door pivot, of a'two-armed lever of bifurcated forma tion pivoted in the box, a curved link pivoted to the door pivot arms and to the short arm of said two-armed lever, a pivotal connection between the check piston rod and the end of the long arm of the two-armed lever, and a connecting link having one end thereof pivoted to the action lever and the other end bifurcated and pivoted to the twoarmed lever between its fulcrum pivot and its pivotal connection with the check piston rod, the said connecting link being located between the spring and the check de- Witnesses:
