HAT HOLDER.

Application filed August 23, 1927. Serial No. 214,854.

This invention relates to a hat holder device and has for its object the provision of an elastic band adapted to be disposed in the interior of a hat for causing the sweat band thereof to grip the head of a wearer.

Another object of our invention is the provision of an invisible hat holding device which is adapted to be adjusted for tensioning the sweat band of a hat when desired to prevent the same from being blown off the head of a wearer.

A further object of our invention is the provision of means for slidably mounting an elastic band on the sweat band of a hat in such a manner that it may be moved upwardly and downwardly thereon for adjustably positioning the same to suit the head of a wearer. I

Referring particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a hat comprising a crown portion 11 and a brim 12. The hat 10 is provided with the usual sweat band 13 which is secured to the adjacent edges of the crown 11 and brim 12 by stitches 14. it being understood that our hat holder device herei nartter defined. may be employed on a band comprising leather, fabric or any other material that is suitable for sweat band purposes.

The sweat band 13 is disposed adjacent the inner sides of the crown 11 and is provided with spaced apart slots 15 through which an elastic band member 16 is disposed. The elastic band 16 may comprise covered or uncov- 53 ered rubber or any other elastic material and may be of any desired width less than the width or" the sweat band 13. It should be understood that the band 16 is disposed inwardly and outwardly through the adjacent slots 15 and that the extremities are overlooped and secured together and to the sweat band 13 by stitches 17, the extremities of the band 16 being on opposite sides of the sweat band 13. It should also be understood that the elastic band 16 is of suflicient tension to cause the sweat band 13 to firmly grip the head of a wearer throughout its entire circumference and that the stitches 17 may be conveniently removed and the extremities of the band 16 may be placed in any desired relation to tension the-elastic band suitably for an individual.

In Fig. 3 of the drawing the numeral 18 designates a felt or soft hat having the customary sweat band 13 therein provided! with an elastic member 16 mounted and secured as above described.

The elastic band 19 illustrated in Fig. 4 is provided at one extremity with a snap element 20 and at its other extremity with a plurality of spaced apart snap fastener elements21 which are adapted to receive the snap fastener element 20. It should be understood that when the band illustrated in Fig. L is employed on a sweat band the extremities are arranged in ovrelapped relation between the inner surface of the side of the crown of a hat and the surface of the sweat band that the tension of the band 19 may be varied for adapting the device to the head of a wearer by engaging the snap ele'- ment 20 in any desired one of the snap elements 21.

In the form of our invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the sweat band 13 is provided with transverse slots 15 which extend substantially across the mid-portion of the band. An elastic band member 16 is disposed through the band 13 as above described. so that adjacent sections are disposed on opposite sides of the band 13. A plate 22 is rigidly attached to the inner outer side of the band 13 and is adapted to be disposed adjacent the side portion of the crown of a hat. The plate 22 is provided with a longitudinal slot 23 in which a resilient clip 24 is slidably mounted. The clip 24 comprises a substantially flatouter extremity 25 which is wider than the slot 23 of the plate 22 and which is adapted to be disposed between the latter and the side of the sweat band 13, and an inner curved extremity 26 which is adapted to be disposed through an aperture'in the elastic band 16 and engaged against the inner side of the latter. The adjacent surfaces of the projection'or extremity 25 and the plate 22 are provided with corrugations for preventing the clip 2% from being moved from j usted position It should he understood that the hand 16 may be adjust-ably attached to a sweat band of a hat in the above described manner at'several places and that the band 16'n1ay be moved upwardly and downwardly in the slots 15' as desired for adapting the device to the head of a wearer for preventing the forming of acircumferential ring on a wearers head due to the elastic band continually acting in one Vertical plane.

The elastic band 16 may be attached directly to the sweat band 13 by snap fasteners or the like, and as shown in Fig. 7, the elastic band may extend only partly around in the hat.

Having thus fully shown and described an embodiment of our invention, what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. The combination with a sweat band for a hat having spaced slots and an elastic band disposed thru the slots, of a plate having a longitudinal slot therein, mounted on the outer side of the said sweat band, and a spring clip slidably mounted in said longitudinal slot, and engaging the said elastic band tor holding the elastic band in adjusted tical plane.

2. The combination with a sweat band for a hat, having spaced slots and an elastic band disposed thru the slots of a plate having a longitudinal slot therein mounted on the outer side of the said sweat band, teeth on the inner side of said plate, and a springy clip slidably mounted in said longitudinal slot, and having an enlarged inner extremity with teeth thereon adapted to mesh with the teeth of said plate/{and engaging the said elastic band forholding the elastic band in adjusted vertical positions relative to the sweat band for preventing the forming of a circumferential ring on a wearers head due to the said elastic band continually acting in one vertical plane.
