R. E. MARLEY BILLIARD CUE TIP HOLDER Filed March 22, 1926 Patented Nov. 27, 1928.
UEED STATES ATENT l t lfifi.
ROBERT E. MARLEY, OF CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA.
BILLIARD-OUE-TIP I-EOLDER.
Application filed March 22, 1926 Serial No. 96,572.
The primary object of my invention is to eliminate the task of gluing new tips on billiard and pool cues, when the tips become loose or knocked off, as is frequently the case in the course of the game. The present method of gluing and clamping of a new tip on a cue, makes it necessary to set the one away for several hours or more to dry and become set before it canbe replaced in use again. This invent-ion enables the cues to be always in readiness; thus saving considerable time, annoyance and expense. A further object is to provide a construction which will be efiicient in use and which will last longerwithout becoming inefficient.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming par of this specification, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a detail of a billiard cue showing my improvement applied thereto, the tip holder be ing shown in longitudinal section; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the cap member of the tip holder removed from the ferrule and billiard one, and Fig. 3 is a full size side elevation of a detail of a billiard cue showing my invention applied thereto.
In the drawing, A indicates a detail of a tip end of a billiard cue. The extreme end portion of the billiard one is reduced in diameter to receive a ferrule B, which is forced tightly thereon and covers the tip end to its extremity. The outer end portion of the ferrule is of reduced diameter to form an inner sleeve 1) and for a short distance back from its extremity is exteriorally threaded at E. After the ferrule member has been fastened over the billiard cue a cap member F is fastened over the ferrule which resembles an external sleeve, internally threaded at- G on its forward portion to engage the threads E of the ferrule. When so engaged the external sleeve of the ferrule envelopes the internal sleeve D and coincides with shoulder H to produce a smooth outer surface along the cue and over the ferrule and cap members.
Before attaching the cap member on the ferrule, a tip I having a curved outer surface I and a flat inner surface I and made of leather or other suitable buffer material is insorted with its curved surface first into the sleeve end of the cap member F. The tip is then turned into engagement with the threads G until its curved end projects a suitable dis tance from the cue. W hen the cap member is screwed on the ferrule, the end of the cue forces the tip outwardly under compression against a shoulder L, until the joint H is closed. Held in this position the tip member forms an efficient tip for the billiard cue and the force of impact of the tip against billiard balls is carried directly to the end of the cue, thus relieving all strain against the threads on the cap and ferrule members which tends to strip the threads or break the tip from its holder. The extreme outer end of the cap is beveled inwardly at K and burred inwardly to form the shoulder L which acts as a stop for the tip to rest against outwardly. ihe bevel K also reduces to a minimum any shoul der that might strike a ball accidentally. This prevents the cap from hitting a ball when miscueing.
Should it be desired to renew the tip the cap can be easily unscrewed and removed from the cue and a new tip can then be reinserted and the cap again attached to the ferrule in a few minutes. This saves time and expense over the old and well known method of gluing tips on cues and provides an efficient tip for cues.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a billiard cue, a ferrule over an end of said cue having an inwardly threaded surface on its outer end and a cylindrical shoulder member on its inner end, a cap having internal threads on its outer end engaged over said threaded surface on said ferrule and adapted to rest with its inner end against the outer end of said shoulder member, and a tip engaged by said internal threads in said cap to assist in holding the tip from disengagement and projecting from said cap, the portion of said tip in said cap resting against the end of said one to relieve strain from the treads on said ferrule and cap caused by impact of the tip against billiard balls and the outer end of said cap being burred inwardly to form inner step shoulder for holding the tip from outward movement and said ferrule and cap being of sub stantially even dlameter corresponding with said cue.
