INVENTOR WITNESS ATTcSRNEY V JOHN KOCH AND nmcnnz'o GUAGLIANOME, or BRISTOL, PENNSYLVANIA.
BILLIARD-CUE TIP.
Application filed January 26, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that J OIIN K0011 and DIN- GENZO GUAGLIANOME are citizens of the United States, residing at it-lat Pond St. and 605 Cedar St, Bristol, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cue Tips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pool and billiards, and has for an object to provide a billiard cue and tip fastener for securely holding the tip on one end of the cue.
Among other features the invention provides a billiard cue which is preferably provided with a suitable ferrule which fits over the reduced end of the cue, and upon which is placed and secured the usual cushion tip which is generally seen on all forms of pool and billiard cues that are now used.
It is well known that the usual pool or billiard cue has the tip rigidly attached thereto by some sort of glue or other adhesive, the tip being glued to the tapered end of the cue in order to permit the glue to dry and harden, thus holding the tip in position. This method of securing cushion tips to pool and billiard cues, however, has been found to be very unsatisfactory, in that persons carelessly applying the tips do not secure a perfect seating of the tip upon the tapered end of the cue, and the tip, when the one is subsequently used being set off to one side of the longitudinal plane of the cue, will prevent accurate shots being made; and furthermore, will readily become loose and detach itself from the cue, thus necessitating the application of a new tip thereto, or a reapplication of the old tip. Furthermore, in applying the tips to the cues in the manner mentioned, a considerable length of time must elapse after the tip is applied before the cue can be used, to permit the adhesive to harden, and even with the best forms of adhesives, the tips do not remain upon the one any great length of time.
Still other the application forms of attaching means for of tips to cues have been used heretofore, one form of which is known as a T-shaped connection, embodying a T- shaped element which is inserted in the tip and has a portion of itself secured in an end of the cue. Inasmuch as tips for cues are usually of a standard formation, it has Specification of Letters Patent.
the tip accurately seated Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Serial No. 144,688.
been found extremely difficult to insert the T end of the fastening element in the tip, resulting in a weakening of the tip, splitting of the same, and a distortion of the tip to an extent which makes it unpractical for use. Furthermore, the T-shaped head must necessarilybe so large that it takes away from the cushioning effect of the tip, and this has also been found to be a very objectionable feature, making this construction a decidedly unpractical one. other forms of devices have been used for attaching tips to cues, embodying a springcushion element, lugs, and other similar constructions, but even these are unpractical, in that they consist of too many parts, cause splitting of the cues, and donot seat the tip properly on the end of the cue; furthermore oft-times necessitating special forms of tips.
In our invention we aim to provide a simple and effective means that can be readily associated with the standard form of tip now generally used, and which is further associated with a suitable ferrule secured to the cue, so that when the tip and ferrule have been relatively associated and the ferrule secured to the cue, there will be formed Still 7 a unitary structure which will be rigid, and I without the use of an adhesive, and without taking away from the resilient or cushion effect of the tip, the tip furthermore being accurately placed upon the end of the ferrule so that it cannot be readily removed, jarred or pushed out of place, the attaching devices employed being of such construction and design that they can be used with the standard tips, and
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of the cue showing our form of construction.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken longitudinally through one end of the cue.

taken at right angles to Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6' is an enlarged perspective view of one of the devices employed for associating the tip rigidly with the ferrule.
Referring more particularly to the views we disclose a one 10 having a reduced portion 11 at one end with which is associated a ferrule 12, preferably for ned of indurated fiber or some other similar material, the ferrule encircling the reduced portion 11 of the one '10, as clearly shown in Figs..@ and The ferrule may be driven onto the cue, or may be secured by a suitable glue or adhesive, as oesired, and the ferrule is furthermore formed with a plurality of passages 13 extending longitudinally thereof with cross openings 1% communicating with the passa es 13. The usual tip 15 is formed with a slot 16 on the under side thereof. Fastening devices for securing the tip to the ferrule are indicated by the numeral 17, one of the devices being shown in detail in Fig. 6, and consisting of a stem or shank 18 having a reduced portion 19 forming fiat surface 20, and formed at one end with a pointed projection 21, offset and extending toward one side, and furthermore pointed as at 22 by providing a beveled face 23 on the projection, the projection furthermore having a rounded face 24:, to facilitate the insertion of the projection into the slot of the tip.
Assuming that the ferrule has "been applied to the cue in the manner shown, wlth a suitable washer 25 interposed between the reduced end of the one and the ferrule, if desired, a plurality of the devices shown in Fig. 6 are associated with the tip by gripping the devices in pliers and forcing the pro ections thereof into the slot of the tip, one of the projections extending in one di rection, and the other in the opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 4. This operation requires but a moment and insures a rigid relation between the fastening devices and tip, and the stems of the fastening devices are then extended into the passages 12 with the flat faces 20 alining with the cross openings 14:, suitable screws being then threaded into the cross openings to have their inner ends engage the flat faces, and thus secure the fastening devices rigidly in position, thereby also rigidly securing the tip and the ferrule, it being readily seen that the provision of the flat faces on the fastenwhen desired.
QXPQI'IQDCG that one end with a beveled face and ing devices, forms abutments 27 which pre vent any removal of the tip and fastening devices from the ferrule when the screws 26 are in securing position.
lVith the foregoing construction it will be clearly apparent that absolute seating of the tip upon the ferrule is secured, and the former will be held accurately upon the latter by the fastening devices, and accidental removal prevented, it being clearly apparent, however, that by simply unloosening the screws 26, the'tip with its associated fastening devices can be readily removed. It has been found by actual a tip secured with the form of construction set forth, maybe used over and over again does not split or'break; lees not become unseated or offset from the longitudinal plane of the cue, and furthermore retains its cushioningeffechthe same as the tips that are ordinarily glued upon the cues or the ferrules thereof.
Having described our invention we claim:
1. In combination with a cue and a tip therefor, a ferrule on the one and provided with longitudinal and transverse passages, fastening devices for reception in the longitudinal passages, projections on the fastening devices and extending into the tip, one extending in one direction,- and the other in the opposite direction in the tip, and threaded lneansextending into the transverse pas sages, and engaging the fastening devices for rigidly associating the tip with the ferrule.
2. In combination with acne and-a tip for connection therewith slotted in its under surface, of-a plurality of fastening elements for securing the tip to the-cue, each fastenmg element comprising a stem provided at its upper end with a pointed offset projection, the said projection being providec at at its opposite end with arounded face, the faces of the projection facilitating the insertion of the same within the slots of the tip, said projections being disposed at right angles with espect to the slots and the terminal of one projectionextending in a direction opposite to the direction of the other of said projections.
in testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
