To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT K. CLARK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, county of Hampden, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to spools, and has special reference to spools that are particularly adapted to receive a Winding of thread of the universal type, and has for its object to provide a novel and improved spool of this character. It further has for its object to provide a spool having novel and iinproved means for removably securing a head thereto.
The following is a description of my invention, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, in which, l

Figs. 3 and 4 are detail side elevations of the component parts of the device for securing the removable head of the cop in place, the head being shown in section in Fig. 4.
The spool illustrated in the drawings is provided with a cylindrical tube or core 2 preferably of paper or other fibrous material on which the thread is wound, and is further rovided with heads 4 and 6, the hea'd 4 eing preferably permanently secured on one end of the core and the head 6 bein detachably secured on the other end o the core. The heads 4 and 6 are each made up of 'a relatively thin flexible annular disk of fibre or other suitable material having its central aperture of substantially the same diameter as the interior of the core 2. The head 4 is further provided with an annular disk 8 of felt or similar material which is laid over the inner face of the fibre disk and is interposed between this disk and the corresponding ends of the core and mass of thread. The head 4 is secured to the core by means of a plug 10 of wood which extends through the central aperture in the head and is 'driven or otherwise secured in the end of the core so as to bring its flange 12 on its outer end against the outer surface of the head and thus permanently secure the head to the core. If desired nails 13 may be used to mechanically hold the plug 10 in place. The plug 10 is provided with an axial bore 14.
The head 6 is removably scoured to the core by means of a plug 16 of wood or other yielding material which extends through the central aperture in the head and into the end of the core. This plug 16 is provided with a flange 18 -on its outer end that abuts the outer surface of the head, and the outer surfaceof the remainlng portion of the plug tapers toward its inner end and is provided with projections forming an annular ridge 20 adjacent to its inner end. The plug is further provided with an axial bore, and its inner end portion is provided with a series of slots or slits 22. A plug 24 is also provided having its outer surface tapering toward one end, and the smaller end of this plug is adapted to be forced, by endwise pressure into the 4inner end of the bore of the plug 16 so as to spread this split end of the latter plug sufiiciently to cause the projections of the ridge 20 to be embedded in the inner surface of the core and thus securely hold the head 6 in place. The plug 24 is provided with an axial bore in alinement with the bore of the plug 14.
With this construction it will be apparent that the head 6 may be easily and quickly removed by driving the plug 24 inwardly, by endwise pressure a sufficient distance to enable the inner end of the plug 16 to return lto its normal contracted condition, and thus 'disengage the projections forming the holding ridge 2O from the core, whereupon the plug 16 may be slipped out of the core and the head 6 removed therewith. When it is desired to replace the head this may be easily done by first inserting the tapering plug 24 in the split end of the plug 16; then slipping the two plugs 16 and 24 into the end of the core lso as to cause the flange 18 to hold the head 6 against the end of the core; and then, by means of an implement inserted through the bore of the plug 10, forcing the plug 24 into the plug 16 suffilll() ciently to s read the inner end of the plug 16 the requisite amount to cause the projections of the ridge 20 to be embedded in the core, as above described.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a simple and strong construction is provided for securing the head 6 to the core in such a manner as to enable it to he easily ap- 30 tubular plug having a flange on one end and i plied an'd removed, and when applied,

A spool comprising a tube, a head for one end of the tu e comprising an annular' disk, and means for detachably securing the disk to said end of the tube comprising a having its inner end portion split longitudinally, extending through the disk and adapted to be inserted into said end of the tube,
and a plug frictionally held Within said tubular plug and adapted to be forced by endwise pressure into the inner end of said isk and having its inner end portion splity longitudinally and provided with external proJections, and means comprising a plug frictionally held within `said tubular plug and ada ted to be inserted by endwise pressure in t e inner end of said tubular plug so as to spread the inner end portion of the' latter to cause it to grip the inner surface of said tube.
