holder for a match box; clips for gripping a cigarette, cigar, or pipe, and particularly of the form that is shown and described in 1 my pending application filed September 21,

1925, Serial N o. 57 ,655, and which has incorporated in the structure a resilient or spring connection between the base and the upright so that accidental displacement of the upper end portion, as by a blow or the like, will be permitted without upsetting the structure as a whole, and the object of my im provement in the present instance is to provide a particular form for the connection between the base and the upright that is adapted to yield responsive abnormal force applied to the upper end portion and that under normal conditions will provide a substantially positive and firm connection and will permit without yielding such contacts as may be involved in striking a match or the like and that will ordinarily operate substantially as a unitary or one-piece structure.

In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a side elevation of my improved smokers stand.

My improved stand for smokers use comprises a tubular upright 10 that is supported by the base 11 and is surmounted by a flaring bell-shaped ash-pan structure 12. Connected to the border portion of the ash-pan structure 12 and at opposite sides of a diameter isa bail or handle 13 that is provided at the top or middle with a holder 14 for a match-box. Said border portion comprises an annular flat platform 15 that is adapted to receive the ends of the handle 13 and also other auxiliary devices such as the clamps or clips for receiving and holding cigars and the like.

The base 11 is a disc-like structure that has at the upper face and axially located an sleeve-like rim 17 that base 11 is generally hollow and the rim 17 is supported by the adjacent body wall 20 which is of appreciable thickness. In the interior or open space 21 of the base 11 and projecting downwardly from the said body wall 20 is a downwardly directed boss 22.

Extending upwardly in the boss 22 is a bore 23 that terminates at a shoulder 24 and in which is operatively support-ed a tubular 25 for the spring 26, the upper end portion thereof fitting within said bore 23;

and being seated against said shoulder 24, the I parts being secured in place in any proper manner.

A connecting bore 27 serves to connect the bore 23 with the bottom of the recess 19 and the upper end wall 28 of the tubular housing 25 has an opening 29 in registration with said connecting bore 27.

A connecting rod 30 for the jects upwardly through the opening 29 in the end wall 28 and through the connecting bore 27 for permitting of making operative connection with a movable cap member or rider 31 that is seated upon the seat 18.

For cooperating with said seat 18 the rider 31 is provided on the under side with an annular depression 32, the bottom of which could be used as the cooperating seat. I prefer, however, to provide a cushioning effect and avoid metal to metal contact and one manner of doing this is to partially fill said depression or groove 32 with some material other than metal, as bymeans of a washer 33 of leather, and which washer 33 serves as the seat proper.

Bordering the seat 33 on the outside is a dependent flange or apron 34. Above said seat 33 on the upper side or portion of the rider 31 is the nipple structure 35 that serves as the connecting means for the lower end portion of the upright 10. Said nipple structure 35 has a cylindrical portion 37 that fits within the tubular upright 10.

Bordering the seat 33 on the inside are the opposed walls of an extension 38 of the rider spring 26 pro- 31 that projects downwardly into the recess 27.

The rider 31 has a screw-threaded bore 39 for receiving the screw-eye 40 and the upper face of said rider 31 is provided with a recess or depression t1 for housing the nut 42 and the upper end portion of said screw-eye 0 with which said nut 42 cooperates as a lock-nut.

The eye portion 43 of the screw-eye 40 projects downwardly into the recess 27 and is engaged with an eye H on the upper end of the connecting-rod 30.

The upper end of the spring 26 abuts against the upper end wall 28 of the spring housing and the lower end thereof engages with a washer 45 that is mounted on the rod and that is adjustably positioned thereon through the medium of the adjusting nut 46 that engages with the lower free end of said rod 30.

The spring 26 tends to hold the rider engaged with the seat 18 and permits of tilting the rider relatively to the base to a li1nited extent in case the upright is subjected to an abnormal disturbing force and without upsetting the base or the structure as a whole. The spring operates to restore the parts to the normal relation after the disturbing efi'ect has been removed.

At the same time, the adjustment of the spring may be made such as to permit of striking of matches against some part of the upright or parts mounted thereon without having any tilting effect.

That is to say, the parts are substantially positively and firmly connected so far as concerns normal uses and will yield to abnormal disturbing conditions.

I claim as my invention 2-- In a stand for smokers use, a base having a dome-shaped body wall that is provided with an opening in the apex portion, having a seat for a spring structure that borders said opening on the inside, and having an annular seat structure that. extends upwardly on the outside from the border of said first mentioned seat, a rider having a seat for (:0- operating with said annular seat and that is bordered by a downwardly projecting cor- Ql'lr g flange that generally encloses said annular seat, an upright that serves as a support for an ash receiver extending upwardly from said rider, and means operatively connecting said rider and base comprising a spring that is connected to said rider and that cooperates with said first mentioned seat.
