BOTTLE CAP AND FASTENER.

This invention relates to a bottle cap and fastener therefor and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a composed of rubber or other material impervious to the penetration of air and adapted to be used upon bottles, jars, or other containers holding liquid or food articles and which serves as a complete seal container and which may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the container.
A further'object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with a bottle cap as stated a fastening means for securely holding the cap in position upon the bottle or container.
WVith these objects in view, the cap, consists of a body of rubber in the general form of a. bonnet having a concaved top portion its outer side tener is in the for under the ring.

or jar cap includes a bonnet shaped body 1 of rubber having a concaved top portion 2 and a continuous flange portion 3. The flange portion 3 is provided at its edge with a tongue 4. The flange portion 3 is rovided at its outer surface with spaced rings 5 there being a groove 6 between the end edges of the said rings. When applied to the container, the concaved portion 2 rests over the mouth of the container and the flange ortion 3 lies against the exterior surface 0 the neck portion of the container as most clearly indicated in Figures 2 and 5 of the drawings. In applying the cap to the container, the tongue 4 is grasped between the fingers and the said tongue may be used as a tab for drawing the flange along the side surface of the neck of the container and for removing the cap from the container.
The fastener for holding the cap firmly upon the container consists of a wire hoop 7 having at its ends hooks 8. The hooks 8 are disposed in opposite directions with relation to each other and consequently they may be interengaged with each other as shown in Figure 1. The wire hoop 7 passes through the rings 5' and lies in the groove 6. The rings 5 hold the hoop in position upon the flange 3.
When the ends of the hoop 7 are drawn together and the hooks 8 thereof are interengaged with each other as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, close in the groove 6 and presses the rubber flange in close contact with the exterior surface of the neck of the container. Thus, a seal is provided which will prevent air or moisture from entering the container or from leaking therefrom.
In Figure 1 of the drawings, the cap and fastener is shown applied to a jar. In Figure 5 of the drawings, the cap and fastener is shown as being applied to a bottle. It is to be understood that the device may be applied to a container of any form or shape having a neck and a mouth and the container may be used for holding jam, pickles, vinegar, fruit, vegetables, or similar food articles. The wire hoop 7 'may be made rust proof by applying a suit-able anti-rust coating thereto if desired. The device may be placed upon and removed many. times from a container without danger of breaking or chipping the neck of the container as frequently happens when a'metal cap is used.

From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a combined cap and fastener of sim 1e and durable structure is provided and t at the same may be easily and uickly used upon a container for sealing ood articles and liquids and that the same may be easily and quickly removed when desired and may be used over and over again many times without danger of breaking the edges of the container.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A container cap comprising a body of rubber having a concaved top portion and a continuous flange portion, said flan e portion having at its outer surface space rin 5, there being a groove between the ends of t e rings, a hoop member consistin of a single piece of wire passing through the rings and lying in the groove, said hoop member having interengageable hook end extremities.
2. A container cap comprising a body of yieldable material having a top portion and a flange portion and rings upon the flange portion, a hoop member of a single strand of wire passed through the rings and havin interengageable hooks on the ends thereo and finger engaging portions on the extremities of said w1re for engaging the hoop member to engage or disengage said hooks.
