INVENTOR BOTTLE CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. s, i922,
Application led February 28, 1922. Serial. No. 539,984.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it'known that I, THOMAS MCNAMEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle Closures, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to bottle closures and it has more particular reference to a closure for milk bottles, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of the type referred to for household use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure for milk bottles which have been primarily opened, said closure being ofa nature to effectively protect the remaining content for contamination or wastage.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure for milk bottles which when applied in use seals the contents` against atmospheric 0r other action which might tend to deteriorate the contents. l g
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists essentially of a closure having an inset portion which is adapted to lfit into the neck of a milk bottle, said closure being provided with a clamping means for firmly gripping the neck ofthe milk bottle.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing constituting a part of this specification and in which like characters of refere'nce designate the same or corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure `1 is an elevation of a milk bottle having my improved closure applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Referring more particularly to the views the numeral 4 designates an ordinary milk bottle having the usual neck rim 5.
In accordance with my invention l stamp or otherwise fashion from any appropriate material, such as thin sheet metal, a closure 6l having a concentric recessed part 7 which is adapted to seat inl the upper rounded portion of the neck 5. It is to be noted that this closure 6 is peripherally Langed at 8 to impinge around the outer portion of the aforesaid beaded neck 5. Integral with the lower part of the peripheral flange 8 are a plurality of diametrically opposed tongues 9 which are of a length so that they may be folded backwardly upon themselves as will be clearly seen more particularly from Figure 2, said tongues embracing and holding firmly in place a stout rubber or other resilient gripping ring 10, said ring 10 serving the dual purpose of retaining the device in place on the bottle neck as well as providing a means which willprevent leakage. The aforesaid tongues 9 as will be seen are upwardly turned upon themselves and clinched at 11 on the top edge of the closure.
From theforegoing it will be readily seen that when my improved closure is sprung over and on to the bottle neck 5 the rubber ring l() will firmly grip said bottle neck whilst the downwardly turned `peripheral flange 8 will also seat snugly and closely` against the aforesaid neck. In use it will be perfectly obvious that when the closure is applied that the contents of the bottle will ,be effectively protected against contamination or wastage.
Still further when a closure of the nature hereinbefore described is applied to a-partially emptied milk bottle, it will be apparent that the same may be completely emersed in cold water or laid on its side in an ice-box without fear of the contents leaking or becoming wasted. An examination of the drawings will clearly disclose thejfact that by my invention I have provided an eX- tremely simple and effective device for the purposes specified and whilst there has been shown and particularly described, a preferred embodiment thereof, it will be obvious the same is susceptible of minor detailed changes in its shape or pattern, and the right is hereby reserved to make such changes as fairly lie within the scope ofthe appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters` Patent is: i
The combination with a bottle having a neck rim of a closure fashioned with a convfoldeol backwardly upon themselves to provide retaining loops for the resilient ring and vthe free ends thereof being clinched on 10 to the upper edge of the closure.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
