FINIAL.
Application filed July 21,
My invention relates to an ornamental inial for a lamp shade and the objects O f my invention are to provide a finial c onstructed and arranged to form a mounting for a transparent or translucent ornamental piece which may be mounted within the. body of the iinial in a simple manne-r permitting its ready replacement by a piece of any other desired color; to provide a inial with an internal recess terminating at its upper end with a slot which communicates with the recess and forms opposed bendable aws which are arranged to permit the passage of the ornamental piece into mounting position on the linial but which can be deformed securely but detachably to hold the p-iece in display position; to provide these and other objects of invention which will be apparent from a perusal of thel following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a lamp shade with my finial in position,
Figure 2 is a sec-tional Viewrshowing the internal recess for mounting the ornamental glass therein,
Figure 3 is a side view of the finial with the jaws in closed position to hold the glass in place, and
Figure 4 is an end cross-section showing the glass in position but with the jaws open.
Referring now to my invention in detail, my finial is illustrated in its usual position as threaded upon the upper end of the lamp shade rod and clamping the lamp shade in position.
The present construction aims to provide a finial adapted to form a mounting for an Ornamental, colorful piece such as a transparent or translucent member, preferably ya piece of colored glass which may be inserted within the body of the finial in amanner such that the rough edges of the glass are completely hidden and the glass appears only through registering apertures formed in the side walls of the inial. In this manner a bright attractive appearance is imparted to the lamp shade. Furthermore by my present construction the selected piece of glass may be quickly removed from its mounting in the finial and be replaced by one of another color.
To these ends l provide a linial preferably et metall. formed with a preferably 1927. serial No. 207,544.
round' base 2 the interior of which is formed with a threaded borey 4 to receive the upper end of the lamp; rod 6. This forms the means by which the linial screws onto the rod to clamp the shade 8 in position as is well known. Preferably the exterior wall of thisbasal portion is given a suitably ornamental finish. lThe upper or body portion 10 of theiinial is formed relativelyl thin and broad and is provided with registering apertures throughits flat wallsV providing an opening through which the colored glass 12 maybe seen. The interior, of the 4body of the finial is hollow, being formed with an internal recess of desired shape; in the present instance I prefer to form this internal recess square or rather rectangular in outline. It will be noticed `that the edges `14 of Jche registering apertures inthe side walls of the body project inwardly from the edges 16 forming the recess rand' they are preferably arranged in .such projectingrelationv as to form an ornamental opening as 'indicated in kFigure 2 of the drawings. Thi/is the edges 16 of these inwardly projecting Vparts completely hide the marginal vportions of the glass 12 as it` lies withinthe recess. Y
lThe upper portion .ofthe internal recess of the linial communica-tes with theuppe'r exterior` walls ofthe top `of the nial by means of a slot 18 formed in the top thereof,
as ,y illustrated clearly inFigure 4:' ofthe drawings. This slot is of a widthequal. to the width of the internal recess so that the piece of colored glass or other display may be passed through this slot into mounting position. By forming the slot in this manner the opposed upper faces of the nial are formed as opposed, bendable, jaws 20, which since they are relatively thin at this point, and are unreinforced and may be easily swaged or bent together `to hold the glass in place in its internal recess. When ydesirable these jaws may be forced apart and another piece of differently colored glass may be substituted to suit the purchaser. In some instances the edges 14C may be arranged to be which permits it to be displayed through the body of the Finial and that I have not only so arranged the edges ot' the aperture through the body o't the inial as to form an ornamental outline for the aperture about the transparent piece, but I have also utilized there very ornate edges to hide the raw edges ot the piece o'lE glass.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-` y ters Patent is l. A finial for a lamp sha-dethe body ot which is relatively thin and has an opening therethrough, said body at the opening being recessed outwardly beyond the inner edges 'of the opening to provide an internal seat and the top of the body being slotted and in communication withthe internal seat to permit the insertion of an ornamental piece through the slot into the internal seat.
2. A linial for a lamp shade the body of Which'is relatively thin and has an opening therethrough, said body at the opening being recessed outwardly beyond the inner edges of the opening to provide an internal' seat Vand the top of the body being slotted and in communicz'rtion with the internal seat to permit the insertion ot an ornamental piece `through the slot into the internal seat the opposed -top portions of the bodyv formed by the slotproviding spaced apart bendable jaws adapted to be `deformed to hold the ornamental piece within its seat.
mental piece inserted in the recess and viewable through an opening in the body.
5. A finial for a lamp shade comprising a .body having an internal recess and an ornalower round portion having an internally threaded bore, and a relatively flat and thin body portion substantially arrow-shaped, the fiat portion having an opening through its 'upper part and the opening at the margins thereof extending outwardly to provide a substantially rectangular internal seat, with the marginal edges of the opening forming an opening of different design and a portion oi the internal seat communicating with the exterior of the body and of sufficient size to permit the insertion of an ornamental piece therethrough into the internal seat and a portion of the walls ot' the body being readily deformable to hold the piece within its seat.
7. A finial comprising a relatively flat body having an internal recess opening through the edge of the body to permit the insertion therethrough ot' an ornate piece, the body having an opening through its side and through the recess, the opening being smaller than the internal recess.
8. A inial comprising a relatively flat body having an internal recess opening` through the edge of the body to permit the insertion therethrough of an ornate piece, the opening being smaller and of different design than the internal recess whereby the raw edges of the ornate piece are hidden.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
