Appneanon mea January f` This invent-ion 'relates to steam separators and particularly to such separators to 'housed with locomotivesand the like. In my Acopending application for patent, Serial No. 39.20@ filedJune 24, 1925, I have'il'lustrated n 'and described a fluid separator which comprises a combination 'of' baille means for breaking -up the bubbles Ain ythe steam and centrifugal separa-ting means Lfor separating the moisture from the steam. This present invention vis an improvement on that inven- -tion and particularlyin applying that iiniention to loc'zomotives. The details of the invention as set forth in said application are not particularly essential to the present invention and hence are not fully set forth herein; but reference may be had to that application forsuch details'.
Of the accompanying drawings Fig; I is a side elevation of arsteam separating system which embodies the features of my invention, a portion of the system being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a reduced plan view of a portion of the system; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of one of the separating units with a portion thereof broken away to show the baliles.
I have found it desirable, in many cases in separating-.the moisture from the steam. or in purifying steam, to pass the steam first through a series of baflies, against which the particles of moisture in thesteam are thrown, so as to break up the bubbles, particularly, when there is more or less foaming in the boiler. This not only disrupts the moisture particles, but it separates much of the moisture from the steam. In carrying out my invention. I then pass the steam through a centrifugal separator which is arranged to throw the remaining particles of moisture and other impurities outwardly away from the steam and thus to allow the dried steam to pass into the steam system without carrying with it any moisture or other impurities.
The means which I prefer for carrying out this method of operation in this instance comprises a bank or banks of baffles 10, which are adapted to break up the bubbles or drops of water. This bank is itself a steam separator and for convenience in this instance may be called the first separator.
F rom these ballle's the "steam passes 'through an outletll, which is an opening in a horizontal' pla-te 12' lmounted in the steam "dome Vlf l-tlie'i'bdile'i'. The pla-H312 entirely Separates the upper portion of the dome from the lower portion except vfor the outletpll; The steam pipe la, together with the valvewop- @1j-anagrafi 15, pass'rhrough the plate. This 'rod l5 is' arrangclfo operate the? throttle valve 16 to allow the ste'amto pass inthe usual manner from the upl'aer end Iof the dome out into the steam` system of the locomotive. l
Iillfter the steam enters the upper chamber I7 ofthe dome it pases 'through throttle valve 'I6 and the'l pipe .14;` into and through the centrifugal 'separator 26. From this separator the steamand moisture pass into the casing 18 which has a chamber 19'.y The casing maybe designated as the watercolflec'tor. In 'this chamber 19 la's'team outlet 20 projects and from this outlet the steam passes to the steam main 2l of the system. In thelower portion of the collector the water from the centrifugal separator collectsi as it is separated from the steam; and,
connected to this chamber is a drain pipe 22. The separated water passing into the drain pipe is carried out wherever desired through the pipe 23. And a vent pipe 24- connects the drain pipe with the chamber 19 and prefvents clogging up of the drain pipe by relieving the back pressure and allowing any air or steam which may be entrained in the water to pass back to the water collector.
Any suitable type of baffles maybe used in the first separator for breaking up the bubbles. I prefer for the purpose the trough shaped baffles 25 which are mounted vertically and through which the steam passes on its way from the boiler to the outlet l1.. By reducing the space between the baffles sufliciently the steam passes through these baffles' at a very high vel-ocity and the bubbles are thus broken and crushed against the sides so that the steam passing out of the outlet 11 is substantially free from bubbles, and the drops of water are materially broken up. A large portion of the moisture from these bubbles is separated from the steam while itis passing through these baflles and flows back into the boiler. The banks of baliles may be xed to the plate 12, and may be removed with the plate for cleaning or other purposes.l
Any suitable type of centrifugal separator may be used for completely separating the moisture from the steam after it has passed through the separator l0 and the throttle valve; I prefer tor the purpose the centrif ugal separator 26, which has spiral-shaped conduits 27 so arranged that the steamand moisture as they pass through are given a rotary forward movement; and as they pass out of lthe outlet 28 the moisture, and other impurities, being denser than the steam, are thrown outwardly along. the inner surfaces of the water collector and pass down into ,in the arrangement of the various parts or the details'thereof kby those skilled in the art without departing from the spiuit of my invention as disclosed by. the claims herein.
I claim as my invention: y Y 1..In a boiler system, `the combination of a dome, a horizontal plate mounted in said .nected to. said dome, said plate having an opening therethrough, a foam breaker mounted beneath said plate, said breaker having a steam inlet and a steam outlet, said outlet registering with said opening, a throttle valve mounted above said plate', meansV for opening and closing said valve, a steam separator mounted in said boiler, a pipe connecting said valve with said separator, and a pipe conseparator and passing out of said boiler. Y
2.* In a boiler having a dome, a horizontal plate mounted in the YCentral portion of said dome and having an opening therethrough, a foam breaker suspended from said plate, said breaker having a steam inlet and a steam outlet, the outlet offsaidbreaker registering with said opening, said dome having a detachable kcover thereon, a throttle valve mounted in said dome above said plate, means for opening and closing said Valve, said valve having a steam inlet and a steam outlet, a steam separatorl mounted in said boiler and having a steam inlet. and a steam outlet, communicating means connecting said valve outlet with said separator inlet, and a pipe connected to said separator out let and passing out of saidY boiler'. h Ir testimony whereof,- I hereunto set my an Y f f HARRY E; Borana.
