This invention relates to motor vehicles and. more particularly to a sanding device adapted to deposit sand or the like beneath the Wheels of a vehicle for the purpose .of increasing the tractionof the Wheels on the ground so as to prevent skidding.
Various arrangements have heretofore been attempted for accomplishing this .function but such devices have failed because they have followed, more or less, the arrangement of sanding devices Aemployed on street cars* and ,the like and have been of such construction as to merely drop a charge or stream of material on the ground directly in front of .the rear Wheels of the associated vehicle. ln vieiv of the fact that the majority of'skids are in :the form of lateral sliding movements, it will be vapparent that any arrangement for depositing ananti-skld material in front of a Wheel sliding laterally is useless.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of the type set forthv ofsuch construction and arrangement that the antiskidding material kwill be positioned so as to prevent or stop a skid irrespective of its direction. f
A further object is to provide a sanding device for vehicles of such arrangement ,and construction .that the sand or -othermateiial will be forcibly positioned beneath the asso*- ciated Wheels irrespectiveofthe direction of movement thereof.l
A. still further object is to provide a device capable of accomplishing the result set `forthof such arrangement as to be easy and cheap to manufacture and assemble and positive and reliable in operation. f
These and other objects which will Vbe apparent to those .skilled in this particular art are accomplished by means of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings which Figure 1 is asomevvhatdiagrammatic view showing in elevation one embodiment r of this invention.A Fig. 2 is a similar; view showing the arrangement of vFig. 1 in'plan. Fig. 3 is a vlongitudinal sectional "view through a portion of .the device illustrated in Figs. l and 2 and Fig. 4L is a ypartialtransverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The particular embodimentof this invention which has vbeen chosen for thepurposes of illustration includes a hopper or container for holding any desired amount of anti-skidding material, such, `for example, as sand or `the like. f l
The vhopper is provided with ,an opening in the bottom ,and an ejectoror sand throwing device is associated ,with the hopper in such away `asto be movable into position for receiving sand through the-hopper openmg. Mechanism is associated With the ejector for the 4purpose of actuating it in such a Way asto forcibly expel the charge of material therefrom and kspread the same over a substantial area of ground immediately `around an adjacent wheel so that at leastthis feature is concerned.
As illustrated,` t-he invent-ion includes a hopper "5` adapted to contain any desired amount of sand or any other anti-skidding material. lThe hopper preferably 'has an inclined bottom 6 andan Loutlet opening 7 is formed in the bottom at itslovvest point. A sand spreader or ejector 8 is mounted for sliding movement beneath the bottom of the hopper and the top of the ejector is provided with an opening 9 for permitting the ejector to be filled With'material When retracted to its rear-most position in which the opening 9 in the top of the ejector registers with the discharge opening '7 'in the hopper bottom. It will be apparent that in all other positions the top of the .ejector will form a closure for'preventing the loss of material Athrough the discharge outlet. The ejector is provided with Vgrooves 10 adjacent 'its lupper edge on eachsidefor receiving track Iforming. supporting ledges 11 .provided along the bottom of xthe hopper. The front of the hopper jis provided with a door 'p12 mounted for horizontal swinging movement upon a shaft 13 and adapted to be normally held in closed position by a door closing spring la.
Ejector operating springs l5 are associated with the ejector in such a way as to normally pull the latter forwardly into sand discharging position.
The hopper is designed to be positioned beneath the floor board or similar structure of aiuotor vehicle and each ejector has an operating cord 1G secured to the rear thereof and extending around guiding pulleys 17 t0 a single operating cord conveniently positioned within reach of the operator of the vehicle, through which mechanism the operator is able to draw the sand ejector rearwardly against the tension of the operating springs 15 until the sand in the hopper can flow through the aligned openings 7 and 9 into the ejector. Release of the operating cord 16 permits the springs l5 to return the sliding ejector suddenly and forcibly to its original position. )i door operating stop 18 is adapted to strike an upwardly projecting tongue 19 upon forcible return to the ejector under the influence of the actuator springs so that the `door flies open and the sand or other anti-shielding material is forcibly thrown from the ejector laterally, and driven under and around the adjacent wheel. By this lateral throwing of the material, as distinguished from merely dropping it on the ground or track, it is spread around on all sides of the adjacent wheel instead of merely in front thereof and a part is thrown directly beneath such wheel. The operating springs l5 are so arranged that if, instead of suddenly releasing the ejector cord 1G, the operator does so slowly so that the ejector is not suddenly and forcibly returned to its original position by the springs l5, the stop 1S will not strike the door operating tongue 19 with sufiicient force to open the same and the sand in the ejector will not be discharged.
That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
l. The combination in a vehicle sanding device of a hopper having an outlet, an ejector slidably mounted in operative relation thereto and provided with an opening adapted to register with said outlet, means for moving said ejector so as to register said openings and means for forcibly returning said ejector to its original position so as to cause a charge of sand to be thrown therefrom.
2. The combination in a vehicle sanding device of a hopper, an ejector, and means for operating said ejector so as to cause a charge of material received from said hopper to be forcibly expelled therefrom.
'3. The combination in a vehicle sanding device of a hopper, an ejector, means for moving said ejector into position to receive material from said hopper and means for operating said ejector so as to forcibly expel material therefrom.
4. The combination in a sanding device including a hopper of an ejector slidably associated therewith and adapted to be moved to material receiving position in relation thereto, a door normally closing one end of said ejector to prevent the loss of material therefrom, a door trip operated by the forcible return of said ejector for opening said door and spring means for so operating said ejector as to cause said trip to open said door to permit the discharge of the material therethrough.
5. The combination in a sanding device including a hopper of an ejector slidabl)v associated therewith and adapted to be moved to material receiving position in relation thereto, a door normally closing one end of said ejector to prevent the loss of material there from. a door trip operated by the forcible return of said ejector for opening said door, spring means for so operating said ejector as to cause said trip to open said door to permit the discharge of the material therethrough and means for normally maintaining said door closed.
G. The combination in a vehicle sanding device of a hopper adapted to hold aY quantity of anti-skidding material, a spreader associated with said hopper so as to receive material therefrom and mechanism for operating said spreader so as to forcibly expel material therefrom in a lateral direction.
'i'. The combination in a sanding device of a hopper, a spreader provided with an opening, means for supplying material to said spreader from said. hopper and means` for forcibly shifting said spreader so as to throw said material through said opening.
8. The combination in a sanding device of a hopper, a movable spreader associated therewith for receiving material therefrom and provided with a discharge opening. a stop for limiting the movement of said spreader in one direction and means for driving said spreader against said stop so as to expel said material through said opening.
9. The combination in a sanding device of a hopper. a movable spreader associated therewith so as to receive material therefrom and provided with a discharge opening, a stop for limiting the movement of said spreader in one direction and resilient means for forcibly shifting said spreader into engagement with said stop so as to expel said material through said opening.
