Be it known that I, VILLIAM P. Toonen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flatbush, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanding or antiskidding devices Vfor automobiles or similar vehicles.
The principal object of the invention is .to provide a device of the character mentioned which will'satisfactorily permit of the distribution on to the surface of the roadway, quantities of sand, fine gravel or other similar granular material having the natural qualities of sand; delivering the sand in proximity to the driving wheels of the automobile and in the normal to permit the driving wheels to take effective driving purchase lagainst the roadway and at the same time positively preventing the -vehicle from skidding on slippery surfaces of the roadway.
Another and essential object of the invention resides in the distribution of sand or a similar material, respectively 'at the side of the driving wheels so as to arrest the tendency of the vehicle t0 skid in either direction. ln this manner the frictional surfaces between the roadway and the driving wheels of the vehicle will possess mairimum elliciency and the operation of retarding the tendency to skid is thereby perfected.
With the above and other objects in view which lwill appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,`the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be nfully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

l do not wish to limit myself to the specific location of the sand container upon the vehicle and it is desired that it be understood that the arrangement herein illust'rated is only illustrative of one way whereby sand or like material may be temporarily stored and carried upon the vehicle. It is stated, however, that l do not wish to ar range-the sand container so that the sand may have an uninterrupted flow by its own gravity to the discharge or distributing pipes to be hereinafter referred to.

In carrying the invention into practice, regard has been given the peculiar angular relation'of the pipe 3, to the next adjacent pipe 2, of each hopper whereby when the Valve mechanism is controlled for the pur-v pose of discharging the sand on to the roadway, the sand will. come from the discharge pipes in a continuous stream or lilm1ike fashion at points respectively at the 'opposite sides of the driving wheels of the lvehicle. This gives an uninterrupted or continuous friction surface between the driving wheels and the natural or slippery surfacesy of the roadway. The result which follows this stated arrangement of the distributing pipes issuch that the skidding of the vehicle is retarded almostvinstantly. .The sand is distributed in the same manner against both of the driving Wheels. The outer pipe 3, extends over and beyond the tread of the driving wheel and at a point in spaced rela'- tion theretoat the front side thereof.v The 80 inner pipe 2, is arranged substantially in converging relation to the outer pipe and it extends loutwardly .and slightly rearwardly as shown both -in Figs. l and 2.
