DISPLAY BOX.
application-mea nay as, 192e.- senat No2 111,084?
An object of my invention is toprovile anv improved display box or carton which may be formed from a unitar piece vor blank or suitable material, suci as' cardf board, the blank being made by a suitable die and the parts of which may be folded or bent into proper relation or engagement toform the completed box.
A further object of myinvention` is to l0 rovde a display box which may be formed y folding a'unitary blank 3of cardboard and which embodiesI means whereby the box may be easily and quickly set up.
A further object of miy invention is to rovide a foldable box wit 1 reinforced sides,
ront, back and bottom and therefore of a firm and not easily distorted construction.
My invention further includes all of the other various objects, operations and fea` tures of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely described or illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
. Fi ure 1 is a plan view of the blank from whic the box is formed, the points at which the blank is cut entirely through being indicated in full lines and those at which it is scored' to facilitate the foldinv operation being indicated in dot and dash lines; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Ithe box; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig'. 4 is a perspective view of the box in dis lay itxon. I
.The bfi is. ormed from a unit of cardboard or other suitable material by a die,-
the sha of the blank being shownin Fig. 1. The x as set up has double sides, front, back and bottom, thus providing a firm construction and one which wil not be easily distorted. 1 d
In the drawings, land 2 are the outer and inner bottoms respectively, 3 and 4 the inner sides and 5 and 6 the outer sides. The double front com rises the outer lpanel 7 and l inner panel 9 an the double bac is formed of the outer and inner panels 8 and 10 respectively. The inner bottom'2 is made of less width than the outer bottom 1 forthe purpose hereinafter described.
, In formin the box from Gthe blank the panels 7 an 8 are preferably first folded `or bent at the` scored lines 7' and 8 respectively, into positions at rigllit angles to the bottom 1; the panel 9 is t en folded about tlm SQOrGd line 9 to form the interior of the enclosed and spectively about the scored lines 11', 12', 13',
14', 15', 16', 17', and 18' at right angles to the respective Ipanels to which they are joined towards t e interior of the box.
The outer sides 5 and 6 are folded about ssj the scorings 5' and 6', respectively, into positions at right angles to the bottom of the box and the inner sides 3 and 4 are then folded about the scored lines 3' and 4', respectively, to form the inner sides of the box paralleling res ectively the outer sides 5 and 6. In the olding of sides 3 and 5 the tongue members 11, 13 and 15, folded as aforesaid, vare secured or locked therebetween and 1likewise in the folding of sides 4 and 6 the tonp'ue members 12, 14 and 16 are eld thereb the engagement between the tongue mem rs and the adjacent sides serving to hold the box to ether.
The inner bottom 2 being. of less widt than the outer bottom 1, after the folding operation has progressed. to the stage described, rectan ular recesses will be formed at each side o the inner bottom correspondin `to the thickness thereof and extending rom the outer side ed es 19, 19 thereof to the inner sides 3 an 4 ofthe box. Project' ing from the inner sides `3 and 4 are tabs or flaps 20, 20 which are preferably of the exact size of saidrectangular recesses and after the parts of the box have been folded as. above described the tabs' 20, 20 are snapped into said rectangular recesses wherein they fit snu ly and are not dislodged'by the usual andling of the box. The tight engagement of the tabs within the .recesses forms' a secure locking means to hold the box to ether. I am aware that heretofore tabs or aps carried by side members of a box have been folded so as to lie upon the boxbottomtland that these have been held in place the inside' bottom resting thereupon but there -is much diiculty in the folding of a box so made with consequent increased cost of labor and'wastage due to the mutilation of the boxes in -siderable particularity a the folding operation. vThese difficulties and disadvantages I have overcome in my improved box.
A lid A is provided for the box which may extend over the'top of the box in shipping and which, when the contents are displayed for sale, may be folded and inserted in the back of the box so as to extend upwardly therefrom and make visible advertising matter displayed thereon. 4The lid comprises a panel 21 which may be bent about the scored line 21 to enable the lid to cover the top of the box in shipment. When thelid is used for display urposes, the panel 21 is in alinement with t e back panel 8 and the panel 2.2, containing the label or advertising ,matter, is bent about the scored li-ne 22 into parallel relation with the panel. 21; the tab 23 is then inserted between the inner end 10 and the outer end 8 whereby the panel 22 is maintained in its display position.
While I have herein described with con-4 ment of my invention I o not thereby desire or intend to specifically limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement of parts to which I have referred as the same may be modified and varied in minor particulars from the forms shown in the drawin A and herein described, without departing invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
referred embodi-l om the spirit and scope of the4 claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A box formed from a unitary blank of foldable material vand comprising double side, front, back and bottom panels, the in- 'ner bottom panel being of less width than the outer bottom panel to provide recesses adjacent the sides of the box, jointed extensions on the innerv side panels fitting snugly within said recesses and a lid adapted to extend over the top of the box in closedlposition and to be folded and inserted between the back panels and extend upwardly therefrom when the box is in display Josition.
2. box formed from a unitary blank of foldable material and comprising double side, front, back and bottom panels, the inner bottom panel being of less width than the outer bottom lpanel to provide recesses adjacent the sides of the box, jointed extensionsA on the inner side panels fitting snugly within said recesses, tongue members extending-from each end of the front and back panels adapted to be inserted and held between the adjacent side panels and a lid' adapted to extend over` the top of the box in closed position and to be folded and inserted between the back panels and extend upwardly therefrom when the box is in display position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of May, 1926.
ARTHUR EMLEN BROWN.
