Description

April 24, 1928. 1,667,707
N. CHERNIAK GARTER HOSIERY Filed April 13. 1926 INVENT OR Q ORNEY M I- "4 I Patented Apr. 24, 1928.
- UNITED STATES NICHOLAS CHEBNIAK, or Bnonx, New YORK.
GARTER HOSIERY.
Application filed April 13, 1926. Serial No: 101,617.
This invention relates generally to garter hosiery used to support hosiery, the invention having more particular reference to a novel type of garter hosiery. y
An object of the invention'is to provide hosiery with novel and efiicient meansfor securely fastening the hosiery at a point above the calf of the leg.
A further object of the invention is to provide garter hosiery comprising a more sani tary means of supporting hosiery.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing, is a side elevational view of a hose shown applied to a persons leg and which is provided with my improved device.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8, is a fragmentary sectional view,
illustrating the flap members as used in combination with my improved garter-hosiery.
The hose 10, such as commonly Worn by women, may be of any suitable material suc as used for hosiery, and is provided with a leg 11, having aninturned hem, as at 12, and suitably stitched -or sewn, as at 13, to the adjacent portion of the leg 11, so as to form a circumferentially disposed pocket 14, which extends around the entire circumference of the leg 11. The upper end of the hose 10, "is provided with an aperture 15, located'adjacent to and intercommunicative with the pocket 14.
The garter 16, preferably of elastic material, such as commonly used for this purpose, is provided with a tightening device 17, such as commonly used to tighten or increase the tension of the garter 16, and is also provided with a clasp 18, adapted to fasten the said garter 16 in place on the leg of the member, a pair of outwardly diverging flaps wearer. It being understood that the garter 16 is insertedthrough the aperture 15 and positioned in the pocket 14.
The aperture 15 is provided with outwardly flaring flap members .19 and 20,
stitched or sewn, as at 21, within the hem at opposite sides of the aperture 15 and are adapted to cover said aperture. The flap members 19 and 20, are provided with a snap fastener 22, so as to hold the said flap members 19 and 20 in a closed position.
Referring'particularly to Fig. 3of' the accompanying drawing, in which applicants novel flap construction is more clearly illustrated, the portions of the flaps outside the pocket 14 are gradually widened past their connecting point at 22. This construction not only makes the size of the flaps on the outside of the pocket 14 larger than the size of the aperture 15,'but also provides a double thickness of material over the garter clasp 18. Increasing the size of the flap members not only prevents the flaps from slipping inside the pocket 14 when said pocket is strained or stretched, but it also permits such straining or stretching without uncovering the garter clasp 18 to view.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as followsz- In hosiery, a hose having an inturned hem, an elastic member disposed in the circumferential pocket formed by said hem, means on the extremities of said member for detachably securing said extremities together, said hem being provided with an aperture for insertion and removal of said elastic secured within and extending without the hem at opposite sides of said aperture and fastening means secured to said flaps for attaching the adjacent ends together.
In testimony whereof I haxe aflixed my 0 signature.
' NICHOLAS CHERNIAK.
