WILLIAM W. WILCOX, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY HOOPS OR TRUNDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,441, dated August 3,1875; application filed July 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM W. WILGOX, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Toy Hoops; which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is an end View, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a mechanical toy constructed of double hoops, in combination with brackets and radial braces, whereby I obtain an article of great strength, and one which of itself is adapted to preserve an upright position. It consists, also, in combining, with the double hoops, brackets, and radial braces, a central driver, in order to admit of propelling the toy, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawing, the letters A A designate the double hoops of my toy, which are preferably made of wooden strips, and B are brackets which connect the hoops A A with each other. These brackets B are bent inward, at a point midway, or nearly so, between the hoops A A, and from the brackets extend radial braces C, to the hub D of the hoop. The tension of the radial braces C is capable of being regulated by means of nuts E, which engage a screw-thread formed near the outer end of the braces; but. if desired, said braces may be fastened to the brackets by riveting or other desirable means, and they may be made to extend from one bracket to the other without a break in the center. To the hub D, or to the central crossing of the braces, is connected the driver F, by means of a pivot, b, so that'the hub and the entire hoop may turn independently of it; and by this driver F a child is enabled to roll the hoop, and retain command of its movement. The driver has the form of a handle, and its length is such that when taken hold of it clears the hoops A A.
It will be readily understood that the double I hoops A A, when placed on end, remain upright without further aid, and thereby a small child otherwise unable to trundle a hoop is e11- abled to use my toy.
By my construction great strength is imparted to the toy, while by reason of its si mplicity it can be furnished at a low cost.
It may be remarked that, by a slight modification, the driver E could be arranged on the edge ofthe hoop, instead of in the center thereof.
VVha-t I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The combination of the double hoops A A, bracketsB, and radial braces C, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
2. The driver F, in combination with the double hoops A A, brackets B, and radial braces C, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of July, 187 5.
WILLIAM W. WILCOX.
