Description

L. A. DUNN C IGARETTE HOLDER Filed June 21, 1926 //v VEN 7'0 f? wwf/vra A? DUN/v Patented Jan. 31, 1928.
UNITED STA LAWRENCE A. DUNN', OF GARDEN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA.
CIGARETTE HOLDER.
`Application led June 21, 1926 Serial No. 117,491. i
My invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders and the like wherein a sleeve is provided with a collar arranged to grip the end of a cigarette or cigar and to readily release the saine when desired.
The primary object of the presentinvention is to provitle an improved holder for cigarettes, cigars, and the like.
Another object is to provide an improved holder which will firmly grip the end of a cigarette or cigar while the same is being smoked and which will facilitate the removal of the stub from the holder' when said cigarette or cigar has been consumed. y
A further object is to provide an improved device which will facilitate the introduction ofthe end of a cigarette or cigar into the holder without damaging the same. Another object is to provide an improved holder which will readily receive and eng'age cigarettes or cigars of various sizes.
A still furtl'ierobject is to provide an improved holder of simple `construction andv which will be simple and efficient in operation. A f
I accomplish these and other objects by means of thejimproved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the presentapplication wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the specification and drawings in which,
Fig. l is a side elevation of my improved holder showing the manner in which a cigar ette is held therein.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken sectional detail showing the construction of the operating elements of the holder, and
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the man` ner in which the sleeve is contractedto engage the end of a cigarette.
Referring to the drawings, my improved holder will be seen to consist of a bit of any suitable size or shape and constructed from any suitable material, said bit being designated in general by the numeral l. The forward end of the bit has a tapered recess 2 formed therein within which recess is fitted the inner end of a correspondingly tapered sleeve 3 flaring outwardly from the end of the bit and arranged to receive the end of a cigarette 4 or the like. The outer end of the sleeve 3 has a plurality of longitudinally disposed splits 6 formed therein to permit the outer end of the sleeve to be normally expanded to receive the end of a fierzibility to the outer split end portion.
A collar 7 is slidably mounted upon the outer end of the bit 1 and preferably provided with an inwardly disposed fiange` 8 arranged to engage the sleeve 3. A long1- ltudinally disposed slot 9 is formed inthe collar 7 to receive a pin 11 secured upon the forward end of .the bit l whereby the collar isenormally slidably retained upon the bit and guided during a longitudinal movement thereon. i
In operation, the collar 7 is initially moved rearwardly to its extreme releasing position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereby permitting the split end of the sleeve 3 to expand to normal flared position. The end of a cigarette or cigar may now be readily inserted into the outer end of the sleeve as shown in Fig. 3, the flared construction permitting said cigarette or cigar to be inserted without marring or damaging the same in any way. After the end of the cigarette or cigar has been inserted into the sleeve 3, the collar 7 is moved outwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. As the collar is moved outwardly the flange 8 presses against the flared end of the sleeve and compresses the split portion into firm gripping engagement with the end of the cigarette or cigar whereby the cigarette may be firmly held.
Then it is desired to release the butt of the cigarette or cigar, the collar 7 is moved rearwardly to disengage the sleeve 3 and permit the split end to be expanded by virtue of its own resiliency, thereby releasing the butt and permitting it to be readily sha-ken out of the sleeve.
The flaring outer end of the sleeve 3 is made of sufficient size to accommodate any ordinary size of cigarette or cigar and permit the same to be firmly engaged 'without the necessity of crowding the end into the holder, thereby avoiding injury to the cigarette or cigar and insuring that the butt may be easily released. Y
The inwardly disposed fiange 8 is `arranged to abut against the outer end of the bit l, thereby defining the eXtreme rearward position of the collar 7 upon the bit l. The outward movement is normally limited by the engagement of the flange with the outer portion of the sleeve 3. Thus in practice the longitudinal movement of the collar is limited by the flange, thereby preventing wear or injury to the guiding pin 11. The flange 8 absorbs the Wear resulting from the frictional engagement of the collar with the sleeve 3, thereby preventing ordinary wear from destroying the utility of the device.
The holder may7 of course, be constructed of any desired size and linished to obtain an attractive appearance. The specific details of construction are, of course, subject to modification in numerous ways without departing from the spirit ot the invention. I therefore do not wish to restrict myself to the speciiic details as herein disclosed, but desire to avail myseliC of any modifications Which may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
l. A cigarette holder comprising a bit;
a sleeve connected to the end oli the bit, said sleeve being longitudinally split along its outer end to receive the end of a cigarette; and a collar slidably mounted upon the end ot the bit and provided with an inwardly disposed flange engagingr the outer end ol the sleeve whereby the sleeve may be Contracted upon the end oit the cigarette.
2. A cigarette holder comprising a bit: a sleeve connected to the end of the bit, said sleeve being longitiulually split and outwardly liared at its outer end; and a collar slidably mounted upon the end of the hit and provided with an inwardly disposed annular flange engaging the outer end of the sleeve whereby the sleeve may be contracted to grip the end ol' a cigarette, said flange being arranged to engage the outer end of the bit to limit the rearward movement 0f the collar along the bit.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
