UNITED STATES CHARLES S. MCKENNEY, F PETERSB URG,
g 1,654,941 PATENT OFFICE. 1
VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR To sEwARD TRUNK AND BAG COMPANY, or rmnnsnune, VIRGINIA, n CORPORATION or VIRGINIA.
BOX-TRUNK HOLDER FOR- .AUTOMOBILE RUNNING BOARDS.
Application filed May. 14,
The object of this invention is a simple, durable, and efficient construction of device for securely attaching to'the running board of an automobile a box trunk or other article, the parts being so arranged that the trunk or the like may be very quickly clamped or fastened in place and as quickly removed when desired, while at the same time when in position it will be held very securely and without liability to rattle or become accidentally detached.
The invention consists in certain constructions, and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which v Figure l is a perspective view of my invention in applied position.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the running board in section, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail sectional view through the lower end of one of the clamps, hereinafter specifically described.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a the running board of an automobile, and 11 a box trunk or the like. The latter has secured to its ends, as shown, keepers 12 which,
in the present instance, are made of strap iron with offset intermediate portions and ends riveted or otherwise securely attached to the ends of the box trunk.
13 designates bowed clamps of which there are two in actual practice, and each clamp is provided at its upper inwardly projecting I end and in the lower edge thereof, with a recess 14c designed to form a hook 15, this end being insertable through the interme diate or looped portion of an adjoining keeper 12, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. j
The lower inwardly projecting end of each clamp 13 is twisted at right angles to the main body portion of the clamp and thence extended downward and rebent upon itself to form upper and lower members 16 and 17 of a nut holder in which a nut 18 is received, as shown, and these members 16 and 17 of a nut-holder are apertured for the passage through them of a screw-threaded binding post 20 which is provided at its lower endv with a handle 21 of any desired construction or formation.
y In assembling the partsit is obvious that the nuts 18 may be readily slipped in'be tween the upper and lower members 16 and 1927. Serial No. 191,469.
threaded binding posts being then work'ed upward as is obvious and into engagement with the lower surface of the running board, whereupon by tightlng up on the binding clamps will be drawn down into firm engagement. with the keepers 12 and the box trunk 11 or the like will be securely and rigidly held in place upon the running board.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
posts 20, the upper hook portions of the will be seen that I have provided a very simple and efiicient device of this character which has comparatively few parts that may be very cheaply made and readily assembled,
and that by means of the clamps and their keepers the box may be quickly securedin place and also quickly detached whenever desired. V
lVhile the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodimentof my invention, it isto be understood that my invention is not limited thereto, and that various changes may be made in construction and arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invent-ion as claimed.
1 claim: I
1. Means for attaching a box trunk or the like to the running boardof an automobile conprising keepers secured to the ends of the box trunk, bowed clamps designed to extend in vertical planes adjoining the ends of the box trunk both above 'andbelow the running board, and provided at their upper ends with hooks adapted to extend through said keepers, the lower ends of said clamps being returned flupon' themselves to form upper and lower portions of a nut-holder, said members being apertured, nuts received between the upper and lower members of said nut-holders, and screw-threaded "binding posts passing upward through said aper tured portions of the nut-holder and workends of the box trunk, bowed clamps provided at their upper ends and in the lower edges thereof with recesses forming hooks and insertable through said keepers, the lower ends of said clamps being twisted at right angles to the main body portions of the clamps and returned upon themselves to form upper and lower members of a nutsaid binding posts being holder, said members beingapertured, nuts 5 receivable between the upper and lower members of said nut holders, and screwthreaded binding posts worklng upwardly for the purpose set forth, the lower ends of provided I with handles. i
In testimony whereof I' hereunto affiX my 25 signature,
