IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,755, dated June 22, 1875 application tiled May 11, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MADISON NEWTON, of Kentland, county of Newton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class of washing-machines in which a cylinder is revolved within a tub or box containing hot soap-suds; and the nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the revolving cylinder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others'skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the washing-cylinder with a section broken away, showing buckets D and angular rods E. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

The cylinder is formed of two solid heads, A A, connected by a rim or band, B, of suitable width and the cylinder is cut or formed in two parts, one of which is removable, making alid for the main part of the cylinder. The lid part of the cylinder is provided at one end on each side with a hook, a, to fasten in a staple, b, on the main part, and the other end of the lid is fastened by means-of a springcatch, d. At this end, on each side of the lid, is a projection, a, entering another staple, b, on the main part, to prevent any lateral movement of the lid.

The heads of the cylinder are provided with suitable journals to support it in the tub or box in the usual manner. On the interior of the cylinder-rim B, at suitable and regular intervals, are secured T-shaped buckets D D,

which carry up the water and let it fall down on the clot-hes.

E E represent l ,-shaped orangular rods or bars, running, like the buckets, from head to head of the cylinder. These rods are set in a circle concentric'with the cylinder, and within the circle described by the inner ends of the T- shaped buckets, and prevent the clothes from rolling up in a ball. Between the buckets D D the rim B is provided with a series of holes, 2' i, to admit water freely, and cause'the cylinder to run smoothly in the water. G represents a perforated metal band or roll, which is placed in the middle of the clothes, and keeps a space open all the time in the center.

By this construction the greatest possible amount of surface of the clothes is exposed to the action of the steam and water.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The combination of the perforated cylinder A B, T-shaped buckets I) D, angular bars E E, and perforated band or roll Gr, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
