Description
T. DAY.
Improvement in Washing-Machines.
Patented Oct. 8,1 872.
UNITED STATES TEoMAs M. DAY, OF WASHINGTON COURT-HOUSE, OHIO,
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,942, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. DAY, of Washington Court-House, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form apart of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in arevolvin g cylinder, constructed with rods or rollers, to allow the water to pass to and from the cylinder from a wash-tub, and provided with paddles hinged within the cylinder, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my washing-cylinder attached to a wash-tub, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the cylinder.
My washing-cylinder is composed of two circular heads, AA, connected by means of wooden rods or rollers B B, placed at suitable distances apart at or near and around the circumference. Within the cylinder thus formed are pivoted two or more boards, 0 O, the surfaces of which may be plain or corrugated, as may be desired. These boards, whichform paddles or pounders, should be made of heavy wood, and as the cylinder is revolving they fall-that is, turn on their pivotsof their own weight onto the clothes Within the cylinder. A portion of the cylinder is, as usual in devices of this character, cut off and hinged to form a lid for the same. The heads A A are onthe outer side each provided with a gudgeon, a, which may be passed through metal ears I) b, attached to a common wash-tub, and, one of said gudgeons being provided with a crank, D, the cylinder is readily turned thereby.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
The cylinder A, constructed with the rods or rollers 13, and'plain or corrugated hinged paddles O, and used in connection with a washtub, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In. testimony that I claim the foregoing as,
