EDEN MOCBEE, OF ARLINGTON, NEW JERSEY. I
nncnrrac'na.
Application filed April 5, 1924. Serial No. 704,834,
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in receptacles or boxes made of iheet pyroxylin, or other analogous mater al or compounds; and, the present invention a has reference, more particularly, to the pro duction of receptacles made of pyroxylin, or similar material, and a novel means of lunging the cover-section to the main body-section ofthe receptacle or'box, with a view of 1o dis ensing with the usual unsightly and unsatisfactory metal hinges and rivets or pins now ordinarily employed for pivotally connecting the yroxylin cover-section to the pyroxylin bod -section. The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel, and simple hinge-connection for the members, as the bod and the cover, of a receptacleor box ma e of pyroxylin or a similar material, with a view of providing a neat and an effective hin e-connection, and dispensing with the usua unsightly metal hinges and with the unsatisfactory means of securing such hinges b means of rivets or pins to the thin body an cover-sections or members of a receptacle made of pyroxylin, or the like.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the followso ing detailed description of the present 1nvention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention con sists, primarily, in the novel receptacle or box made of pyroxylin or other analogous material, and a novel hinge-connection between the members of the receptacle or box, hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the present invention consists, furthermore, in
I the novel arran ements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same,
all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finall embodied in the clauses of the claims, whic are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views ofa receptacle or box made according to and em bodying the principles of the present invention respectively illustrating the members of the receptacle in their closed and in their ll opened relation; and Fi re 3 is a similar View of the receptacle 'or' box, looking toward the hinged portions of the body-member and the cover-section of the same.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional representation of the receptacle or box, said section being represented-as being taken on line 4- 1 in said Figure 3; and Figures 5 and 6 are detail views, illustrating more particularly on an enlarged scale, fragmentary portions of the body-member, the cover-section, and of the hinging means used in connection with said members.
Figures 7 and 9 are ers ective views of a pair of receptacles mad; 0 yroxylin, or the like, provided with modified forms of hin econnections made according to and emb ying the principles of the present invention.
Figure 8 is a detail sectional representation taken on line 88 in said Figure 7 and Figure 10 is a detail sectional representation taken on line 10-10 in said Figure 9.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate correspondin parts.
Referring now more particu arly to Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, the reference-character 1 indicates a complete receptacle or box made of pyroxylin, or other analogous materlal, the same comprising a main. body 2 and a cover-section 3. In practice, the said main body is made of two layers of sheet pyroxylin, and the cover-section is also made of two layers of sheet-pyroxylin, the said sheets or layers of the respective main body and cover-section having disposed between them a sheet or layer of a suitable flexible woven fabric or cloth 4, the same being, preferably in one continuous piece, so as to provide a hinge-connection, as 5 along the abutting marginal edgeortions 6 and 7 of the sa1 main body an the cover-section, substantially as indicated in Figures 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings.
By means of the usual methods, the sheet or 1a er of the woven fabric is suitabl dis posed y between the two la ers of sheet-pyroxylin, or the like, and t en by means of the method set forth in my former application forLetters-Patent, filed May 15, 1923,
Serial No, 639,105, or by any other practical method, the united parts are assembled in a manner, so as to provide a receptacle or box,
comprising a main body-member and a cover-section, of the general character represented in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings.
To overcome any possibility of the woven fabric or cloth 4, breaking at the exposed hinge-connection 5, the interwoven threads, as t e warp and weft, are arranged on the bias between the pyroxylin sheets, as indicated at 8 in Figure of the drawings, so as to bring any undue strain produced, when the cover-section is opened to assume the positions indicated in- Figures 2 and 6, against the weave. The reference-character 9 indicates a suitable padding or inner lining with which the body-member of the receptacle or box may be provided, but such padding or lining is not essential to the principles of the present invention, and may be omitted if desired.
'In lieu of the form of woven fabric or cloth hinge-connection herein-above described, and illustrated in Figures 1 to 6 inelusive, a hinge-construction, such as is il-' lustrated in Figures 7 and 8 may be employed. This hinge-construction, as will be seen more particularly from an inspection of Figure 8' of the drawings, consists, essentially, of a pair of base-members 10 and 11 cut in the form of strips from sheet-pyroxy-. 'lin, and a pair of face- members 12 and 13,
also cut in the form of strips from sheetpyroxylin, the various strips being of any suitable ornamental configuration, and the various base and face-members having operatively disposed. and secured between, in a manner similar to the arrangement described in connection with said Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, a piece ot a suitable flexible woven fabric or cloth, as 14, the same being arranged so as to rovide a hinge-connection at 15, along the a utting marginal edge-portions 16 and 17 of the res ctive hinge-members thus provided by t e respective basemembers and face-members. The said connected hinge-members thus provided, as will be seen from said Figure 7 of the drawings,
are thereupon secured to the marginal ed eportions 18 and 19 of the main body and t e cover-section of the box or receptacle, byuse of a yroxylin solvent, such as acetone, or
other so vent practical for cementing the pyroxylin hinge-members to the body and the cover-section of the pyroxylin receptacle or box as will be clearl evident.
In ban. of the strip-s aped hinge-connecftion just described, the same arrangement of base-members and face-members of pyrpxylin, and an intermediate h nnectlon-made of a woven fabric or cl may be general construction of the hinge-connection shown in said Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, and being adapted to be secured to the body and the cover-section of the receptacle or box, in the manner herein-above described. a
Of course I am aware that my present invention is capable of some changes in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A receptacle comprising a body-member and a cover-section, each body-member and cover-section consisting of coextensive layers of sheet-pyroxylin "or analogous material, 'and a hinge-connection between said body-member and said cover-section, said hinge-connection comprising a piece .of
woven fabric or cloth having portions thereof imbedded between and coextensive'with rial, and a-- hinge-connection between said body-member and said cover-section, said hinge-connection comprising a piece of woven fabric or cloth having portions thereof imbedded between and coextensive with the layers of sheet-pyroxylin of the said 1 this Brd'day of April, 1924.
