.IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR DISTRIBUTING ASHES 0N ICY SIDEWALKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,562, dated June 15, 1875 application filed May 18, 1875.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. HUGHES, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Device for Distributing Ashes on Icy Sidewalks, Roadways, 850., of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to construct a simple and effective device for distributing ashes on icy sidewalks, &c.; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my ashdistributer; Fig. 2 a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 transverse vertical section of the same.

The apparatus consists of a perforated cylinder, A, of sheet metal, or a cylinder of wiregauze, attached at its opposite ends to the circular plates B B, the edges of which are toothed or serrated, so as to prevent the sliding of the apparatus when it is drawn or pushed over the icy pavement by means of the handle D. The plates B B are so much larger in diameter than the cylinder that the latter is never in contact with the ground. The stem of this handle is secured to the yoke E, the ends of which are pivoted to the projecting ends of a central spindle, b, the latter passing through and being secured to the cylinder. An opening, cl, is formed in the top of the cylinder A for the introduction of the ashes, the opening being provided, in the present instance, with a sliding door, 6, for which a hinged or detachable cover may be substituted.

The opening for the introduction of the ashes may, if desired, be in one end of the cylinder.

When the apparatus is drawn over the ground the icy surface of the latter will receive a uniform thin layer of fine ashes, which will fall through the perforations or meshes of the cylinder as the latter revolves, the cinders and clinkers being retained within the cylinder, while the more friable masses will soon be sufficiently disintegrated to pass through the perforations.

I claim as my invention- The combination, substantially as described, of the perforated or wire-gauze cylinder A with the toothed plates B and appliances for drawing the same over the ground.
