To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN C. GREENO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in canes.

The object of my invention is to provide a tubular cane with which material, such as sand, may be carried and dispensed .as needed upon icy pavements for insuring a sure footing for the person carrying the cane.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cane. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.

The cane is provided with a tubular body 1 the upper end of which is externally screw threaded and has fitted thereto a laterally extending handle 2 adapted to cooperate with a finger hold 3, which extends through an aperture which may be a longitudinal slot 4L in the body and which is secured to and forms part of a receptacle 5, which is longitudinally movable in the body 1 and has its closed lower end rovided with a central discharge opening a apted to receive therein and be closed by a central vertical conical extension 6 provided on the upper end of a -plug 7 mounted, preferably removably by a screw threaded connection, in the lower end of the body 1. The body 1 below the receptacle 5, and preferably at the lower end of the extension 6 is provided with one or more lateral discharge openings 8 through which the sand from the receptacle 5 may be discharged upon the pavement when the receptacle 5 is upwardly drawn by grasping the handle 2 and finger hold 8. Said openings 8 and the interior of the body 1 below the receptacle 5 serve to form a passage for the conduct of the sand or other material from the receptacle 5.

The receptacle 5 is provided at its upper end with a removable cover comprising a fiat circular plate 9 against which bears the lower end of a coil spring 10 the upper end of which bears against the handle 2. The

spring 10 normally serves to force the receptacle 5 downwardly to a position in which the discharge opening of said receptacle will be closed by the extension 6, which thus becomes a valve.

In operating the invention, the handle 2 is first removed, after which the spring 10 and cover 9 are removed, upon which sand may be placed in the receptacle through the upper end thereof. The cover 9, spring 10 and handle 2 are then replaced. l/Vhen a person desires to discharge sand to secure a sure footing, he grasps the finger hold 3 with the hand which grasps the handle 2 and draws said finger hold and the receptacle 5 upwardly, thus opening the outlet of the receptacle by withdrawing said receptacle from the conical extension 6. The sand will then pass from the receptacle 5 into the body in the space below the receptacle, and being diverted outwardly by the conical extension 6 will escape through the openings 8. As soon as sufiicient sand has been discharged to effect the purpose, the finger hold 3 is released, upon which the spring 10 will force the receptacle 5 downwardly to the closed position shown in Fig. 2.

I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, wha I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is

l. A cane having a tubular body provided with an aperture, a discharge opening and a valve, a receptacle for sand longitudinally movable in the body and having a discharge opening adapted to be closed by said valve, the receptacle having a finger hold extending through the aperture for moving the receptacle to the open position, and means for normally forcing the receptacle to the closed position.

2. A cane having a tubular body provided with an aperture, a discharge opening, and a plug having a central conical extension extending above said opening and serving as a valve, a receptacle for sand longitudinally movable in the body above said opening and having a discharge opening adapted to be closed by said conical extension and having a finger hold extending laterally through said aperture, and a spring for normally forcing said receptacle to a position in which said valve will close said opening in the receptacle.

3. A cane having a tubular body provided with an aperture, a discharge opening, a plug in the lower end of the body having a conical central extension, and a handle secured to the upper end of the body, a receptacle for sand longitudinally movable in the body and having a laterally extending finger hold extending through said aperture adjacent to the handle and having in its lower end a discharge opening disposed above the discharge opening in the body and adapted to be closed by said conical extension, and a spring for moving the receptacle to the closed position.

A cane having a tubular body provided with a threaded upper end having a longitudinal slot, a handle fitted to the threaded portion, a discharge opening adjacent to the lower end, and a plug in the lower end having a central conical extension, a receptacle for sand longitudinally movable in the body above said opening and having a discharge opening in its lower end adapted to be closed by said extension, and having a laterally extending finger hold extending through said slot, and a spring in said body and bearing against the receptacle and handle for normally forcing the receptacle to the closed position.
