LIGHT DEFLECTOR.
Application filed'March 5, 1923. Serial No. 622,875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn ltlclllnmor'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and use? ful Improvement in a Light Deflector, of.
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a light deflector and has for its object the provision of a device for deflecting the rays of light issuing from the lamps of the vehicle whereby there shall appear no glare from the vehicle, lamps which willbe simple in structure, economical of manufacture and highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a light deflector having deflecting members projecting across one portion of it and a supporting band extending around the lamp with which used and adapted to engage said lamp intermediate the edge of the reflector thereof and the lens used therewith.
Another object of the invention is th provision in a deflector of deflecting members having a plurality of separate portion lying in different planes, the central or main body portion having a fin or flange projecting from each edge at an angle to the main body portion.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a central vertical sectional View of the invention applied to a vehicle lamp.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the invention, and
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view illustrating the locking means carried by the lamp rim.
The invention, in its preferred form, coinprises a metal ring 7 having an inclined flange at the inner edge adapted to lie in snug engagement with the reflector 9 of the lamp 1(), said flange being integral with said ring. In its operative position the ring is laid within the outer edge of the lamp in engagement with the cushion 12 on the inner side of the lens 13 which is held in position on the lamp by the ring 14. Projecting across the ring 7 are deflecting members or shutters which have a central body portion 15 with an outwardly inclined portion 16 at the lower edge thereof and an inclined portion 17 at the upper edge, the portions 16 and 17 lying in parallel planes so that they extend vertically when in position on the lamp. These deflecting members are integral with the ring 7 and extend from the flange 8. As shown in Fig. 1, they are swaged so as to project forwardly of the plane determined by the edges of the portion 8, the; portion 17 lying in the plane determined by the edges of the portion 8. The swaging is abrupt at the ends of the deflecting members so that the portion throughout practically its entire length extends 'forwardly as above mentioned. Mounted on the member 8, adjacent its edge is a circular member which comprises a narrow strip of metal having ribs 19 extending from side to side, the ring 18 being attached to the portion 8 by means of suitable rivets or bolts. These ribs 19 extend vertically when mounted on the lamp and extend above the upper end or edge of the portion 17 so as to terminate in a plane which, if extended horizontally, would pass through the portion 16 above its lower edge the purpose being to prevent a horizontally traveling ray of light to emanate from the lamp at this portion. As shown in Fig. 2 the lowermost member 16 extends slightly below the center of the ring and consequently, when mounted on the lamp, extends below the center of the lamp.
The ring 7 is provided on its circumference with a plurality of notches 20 which serves to accommodate the spring 21 which is provided with lugs 22 for locking the ring 14in position on the lamp. In various types of lamps the means of locking the rim thereon varies, but in practically all cases it would be necessary to form some sort of a notch in the ring 7 to accommodate the locking means, and in addition to accommodating the locking means these notches also prevent the turning of the ring 7 after it is mounted on the lamp.
There is thus provided a simple structure which may be easily and quickly installed on a vehicle lamp for preventing the rays of light emanating therefrom from passing directly forwardly from the lamp from the upper portion thereof. lVhen the light rays strike the portion 15 they are reflected to the lower part of the lamp and the members 16, 17 and 19 prevent the light rays from issuing through the spaces between the de-:
flectors.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise form shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A deflector for vehicle lamps comprising a metallic band adapted for mounting thereon; a flange integral with said band and adapted for engagement with the reflector of said lamp; deflecting members integral with said flange and projecting across the same, the surface of the central longitudinal portion of said deflectors lying in a plane other than the plane determined by the edge of said flange, and the surface of the upper portion thereof lying in said plane determined by the edge of said flange.
2. A deflector for vehicle lamps comprising a metallic band adapted for mounting on a vehicle lamp; a flange integral with said band and adapted for engagement with the reflector of said lamp; deflecting members projecting across said flange and integral therewith, the surface of one portion of said deflectors lying in the plane determined by the edge of said flange and the surface of the other portions thereof lying in a different plane.
3. A deflector for vehicle lamps comprising a metallic band adapted for mounting on a vehicle lamp; a flange integral with said band; deflecting members integral with said band and projecting across the upper portion of said band; and a metallic ring mounted on said band and provided with ribs extending across the same for cooperation with said deflectors for preventing the en'ianation of light from the lamp between said deflectors.
4c. A deflector for vehicle lamps comprising a metallic band adapted for mounting on a vehicle lamp, said band being formed circular, the inner portion of said band being angularly turned to lie at an inclination to the main body of said band; deflecting members projecting across said band from said inner portion and integral therewith, the surface of one portion of said deflecting members lying in the plane determined by the edge of said inner portion and the surface of another portion of said deflecting members lying in a plane, other than the plane determined by the edge of said inner portion and parallel to said plane, said plane determined by the edges of said inner portion being parallel to the plane of said band and a portion of said deflecting members lying between the portions mentioned in a plane inclined to the plane of said band.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan.
