Description

Dec. 19, 1922. 1,439,110. CVB. KYLE.
DEFLECTOR FOR HEADLIGHTS. FILED sEPLzz, |920.
Patented Dec. 19, 1922.
UNITED STATES CHRISTIAN B. KYLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYIIANIA.
DEFLECTOR FOR HEADLIGHTIS.
Application filed September 22, 1920. Serial No. 411,986.
To all whom, it Amay concern .Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN B. KYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county ofl Philadelphia, and State ofl Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Deflectors for Headlights, of which the following is a full', clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to lights for vehicles, a-nd more particularly to headlights for automobiles, and is designed to provide an eflicient shield or deflector for a lamp in the focal center of a parabolic reflector, which will prevent the intense rays of light from being projected above a given plane, and at the same time intensify the light thrown on the road directly in front ofthe car.
A further object of my invention is to provide a shield or deflector, which can readily be inserted between the lamp in the focal center of a parabolic reflector and a dimmer lamp out of focus, and which ,can be rigidly secured in position in headlights now in use without changing their construction.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit.
and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claim. y i Fig. 1 is a front view of one form of re- I flector with my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig.' 1, With a lamp in the focal center, and a lamp out of the focal center.
Fig. 3 isy a face view of a removable deflector.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the reference character 2 designates a parabolic reiector having an annular flange 3. 4 are key slot openings in the flange for securing the reflector in a lamp casing in the well known manner. y
The reficctor is provided with two lamp openings 5 and 6 for the reception of lamps 7 and 8, respectively, the lamp 7 being 1n the focal center of'thereiector While the lamp 8 is above the focal center.
mounted that its concaved surface is next to the lamp in the focal center, so that the deflected rays of light above a given plane will be reflected `back to the reflector 2 from.
which they will be again reflected below the outer edge of the deflector, to the road directly in front of the car, so that the light at this portion will be increasedwhile the objectionable light rays from the focused lamp above a predetermined plane will be eliminated.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a deflector similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but in which ,the deflector is formed integrally with a supporting ring, and which is adapted to be insertedin a reflector such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and secured in position by means of the reflector securing means, without soldering the deflector to the reflector.
In this form 3a designatesa ring having key slot openings 4a therein, and 9? the deflector which is integral with an arcuate shaped strip 10 extending from one side of the ring to the other side. tab secured to the deflector 9a at approximately the center of its peripheral edge, and which is provided with an opening 12 for the reception ,of the plug of the lamp in the focal center of the reflector.
This form may be made by rst blanking out the device and then shaping the deflector between dies.
The device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is arranged to,be secured in reflectors already on the market, or may be -used in connection 11 designates a y with new lamps, so that the deflector can retaining members and the lamp in the focal center.
-The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a deflectorof parablic form for a parabolie-re'leetor which is arranged to deflect and reeet thevrays of light from a focused lamp above a predetermined plane, back to the parabolic reector by which they are reflected to a lower plane to increasegthe light on the road in front of the vehicle or automobile.
Having now fully described my invention, What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A removable deleetor fora parabolic reflector comprising a continuous annular suportlng frame a crescent shaped defleetor ent lnto the erm of a segment of a parabol-a, the outer periphery of the deflector beingarranged to contact with the face of the reflector, an arcuate shaped supporting member formed integrally with and' extending from 'one side of the frame tothe other
