TOBACCO PIPE.
Application led November 1, 1923. Serial No. 672,170.
through, lsaid closure being removable so as to permit theV easy cleaning of said passage when desired. Y
My invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described, which is simple, convenient, efficient and satisfactory for luse wherever found applicable.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown `and described will be'obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularlyv pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference charactersV indicate like or corresponding parts: Y
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my device;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing the end .closure for the draftl passage; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line /1-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, there is shown a pipe having a chambered bowl portion 1 withl a stem 2 eX- tending therefrom. The stem may be made in yone or more parts, there being two parts shown, and may be either integral with or separate from the bowl.
Extending clear through the stem and the bowl is a draft passage 3, this draft passage being continuous-from the free end of the stemto the exterior. of the bowl, and preferably being arranged so that it includes the lower portion of the tobacco chamber.
The passage from the stem to the tobacco,
chamber is always open when the pipe is in use and I have arrangedk a closure at the end of the passage through the bowl.
This closure preferably comprises a cupshaped member having an annular rim 4, a hub or seat 5 having a tapered exterior peripheral wall 6, a web 'v connecting the hub and rim at one side of the rim, andv an annular outwardly directed flange v8 at the other end of the rim. Slits 9 may be" formed through the rim at the flanged end, if desired, so as to render the rim slightly expansible thereat. The hub is yprovided with a bore 10 `therethrough of thesame size the passage-way 3 and in registry therewith. Y K
A plng or cap having a head 11 is provided with a chamber 12 from one end so as to form a neck portion 13 adapted to frictionally enter the open end of the cup- 'i shaped member and form a closure therefor. A gasket or disk 14 is arranged in `the chamber 12, the free end of the neckportion 13 being ianged' or peened radially inwardly as at 15 to' preventthe gasket from falling out.` A spring or other -resilient member 16 is interposed between the, gasket and the bottom wall 'of the recess 12 to constantly urge the gasket outwardly of the recess and against Vthe hub `or seat 5 so as to form an effective seal for the draft passage. The cup-shaped member is pressed into the bowl at the end ofthe draft passage and may be cemented there-at if desired, the cap being removably insertable thereinto. s
Thus it is seen that I have provided an effective `closure for the end of the draft passage and which will be eiiieient in operation, will not become easily lostor injured, andV which Will be relatively inconspicuous when in place.
The stem 2 may be either straight or bent and in both cases the operation of the device. When it is `desired to` will be the same. clean the passage, the cap is removed either by the finger or by any suitable tool, suoli as a knife, va coin or the like, and a pipe cleaner is inserted through the stem yand finally drawn outwardly of the passage from the closure end. Thus there is no danger of the nicotine being drawn up into the mouthpiece when removing the cleaner. -The closure may be fitted to either old pipes ornew ones, as desired. It will be noted that I so form the parts in the preferred construction that the fingernail or tool may be so pushed in thespace 20, that thecap will be forced off without pulling. This makes itmore easy to bemoved with the nail and without danger of splitting the linger or thumb nail.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made m the same without departing 'from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination ot parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
\l. A tobacco pipe, comprising a chambered bowl and a stem provided with a draft passage therethrough extending to the exterior o' said bowl, and yieldable means closing said passage at the exterior oi? said bowl.
2. A tobacco pipe, comprising a chambered bowl and a stem provided with a draft passage therethrough extending to the exterior ot said bowl, a cup-shaped member inserted into said bowl at the end or" said passage, a cap frictionally insertable into said cup-shaped member to form a cies: therefor, and a compressible gasket between said cup-shaped memberand cap.
3. A tobacco pipe having abowl and a steni provided with a passage extending thr ugh vthe stern to the exterior of said bowl, a member inserted in said bowl at the end oit' said passage andhaving a bore in line therewith, a removable cap rictionally slidable into the end ot said member to form a closure therefor, a disk movably held in said cap, and resilient means between said disk and cap to press the disk against the bore through said member.
4. A tobacco pipe, comprising a chambered bowl and a stem provided with a draft passage therethrough, a metal member insertedy into the end of said passage and comprising a rim portion, a bored hub and a web connecting said hub andv web connecting said hub and rim, and a cap having a neck portion frictionally insertable linto said member between the inner wall oi the rim and the outer wall of the hub, a gasket movably held in said neck, and a spring between said gasket and cap to press said gasket against the end of said hub to seal passage therethrough.
5. A tobacco pipe, comprising a chambered bowl and a stem provided with a draft passage therethrough extending to the ex terior of the bowl, a cup-shaped member inserted into said bowl at the end of said passage, and comprising an annular rim portion having an outwardly directed end flange at one side, a web across the other side, a hub the center of said web transverse thereto and having a tapered exterior surface, and a cap having a chamber therein from one end to form a neck portion to fric tionally engage the inner surface of said rim, the tree end o1L said neck portion adapted to encircle said tapered hub, a coinpressible gasket within the chamber of the cap, a spring in said chamber and bearing on said gasket to press it against the bore through said hub, the outer end of said cupshaped vmember having slits therethrough so as to render it radially expansible thereat.
6. A tobacco pipe comprising a chambered bowl and a stem provided with a draft passage` therethrough extending to the eX- terior of the bowl, a-cornpressible gasket inserted into said bowl at the end ot said passage, and means for holding the gasket in place in the passage.
7. A tobacco pipe comprising a chambered bowl and a stem provided with a draft passage therethrough extending to the eX- terior of the bowl, a compressible gasket inserted into said bowl at the end ot' said passage, and yielding means for holdingV the gasket in place in the passage.
ln testimony whereof, i, have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
