Description

` G. K. CANIAS CUE Filed Augf 29, 1925 I Q Ill Patented May 19, 1925.
` GEORGE K. CANIAS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUE.
Application led August 29, 1923. Serial No. 659,864.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. CANIAS, a subject of theKing of Greece, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelghia, in the county of Philadelphia and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cues, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cues and its objects are to provide a cue having means whereby the tip may be quickly and easily renewed or replaced without the use of adhesives, and a tip which will have a greater and substantiallyequal rebounding effect throughout its life.
These objects, and' other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings in Whichj Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa cue constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 a section on line 2--2 yof Figure 1, and
Figure 3 a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1, illustrating. a tool which may be used for removing the holding-sleeve.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a cue having a reduced end 2 to provide a shoulder 3. On this reduced end 2, which is slightly tapered, iits a reinforcingssleeve 4 having a castellated end 5 threaded exter nally as shown at 6. The reinforcing-sleeve may be secured to reduced end 2 inany suitable manner, preferably by a in 7, andthe castellated end 5 fitted so that 1t will expand slightly to taper the threaded part 6 and abut shoulder. A tip 8, of rubber or .other suitable rebounding material, abuts reduced end 2 so as to have a solid base t9 produce the greatest` rebounding effect. A holdingsleeve 9, threaded internally at its lower end and screwed onto the threads-6 of the reinforcingsleeve,'has the other end 10 castellated to provide spring fingers 11 which grip tip 8 and hold it in position.
To renew a tip on my improved cue I provide a tool 12, similar to pliers, which has the ends of its handles 13 provided with jaws 14, in which may be formed teeth or corrugations. The gripping part 15 of the tool is formed to embrace the holding-sleeve 9 and provided with a pin 16 which is adapted to fit into an opening 17 in holdingsleeve 9. @n the end of gripping part 15 I provide a pair of prongs 18 for forcing the tip through the sleeve during vits -replacing operation.
To use tool 12 for replacing a tip, the jaws 14 are opened and the worn tip gripped between them and pulled. out from between spring fingers 11 of holding-sleeve 9. The gripping part 15 of the tool is then placed round sleeve 9 so that its pin 16 will be within opening 17. The tool is then in position to unscrew holding-sleeve 9 from reinforcing sleeve 4, after which` a new tip is inserted within the threaded end of holdingsleeve 9. Prongs 18 are then forced into the vtip so that the tip Amay be turned and screwed past the threads within holdingsleeve 9. After the tip has been screwed into the`sleeve a suiiicient distance to permit engagement of the threads on holdingsleeve 9 with 'the tapering threaded part 6,
the holding-sleeve 9 is placed over sleeve 4 and screwed thereon by tool 12 in a similar manner to that for unscrewing. The tapering threads bindingly engage the threads within sleeve 9 and thereby lock the sleeve thereto. During the screwing movement the tip will be forced upward lthrough end 10 and between the springs fingers 11. The tip, 'being of slightly larger diameter than the castellatedend 10, causes s rings iingers 11 to press into the tip and the same to holdA it in position. The cue then ready for use.
By constructing a cue in the manner above described the tip may be made comparatively long, thereby increasin and rmly grip nov maintaining substantially constant re ound- 1 use of adhesives, and the cue ycheaply manufactured.
While I have described by invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination in a cue; a tip abutting the end thereof, and a sleeve removably secured to the outer side adjacent the end of the cue and having a castellated end providing spring fingers for gripping the tip to hold it in positlon.
2. The combination in a cue; a reinforcing sleeve secured to the outer side adjacent the end thereof; a tip abutting the end of the cue; a holding sleeve removably secured to the outer side of the reinforcing sleeve, and resilient fingers integral with the end of the holding sleeve for gripping the tip to hold it in position.
3. The combination in a cue; a reinforcing sleeve secured to the outer side adjacent the end of the cue and having a 4castellated 15 inner end threaded on its outer side, the
castellated end being expanded by the cue to provide a tapering thread; a tip abutting the end of the cue, and a holding sleeve threaded on its inner side at one end for screwing onto the tapering threads of the reinforcing sleeve and castellated at the other end to provide spring fingers for gripping the tip to hold it in positlon.
In testimony whereof 'I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE K. GANIAS.
